Last week, a message landed in the inbox of the Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center that really touched our team.

It was from the grandmother of a boy named David, who is almost 12. She told us that her grandson had recently sold some of his toys - not to buy something new for himself, but to donate the money to help purchase defibrillator pads for emergency teams and first responders in Ukraine. He had heard they were needed and wanted to help.

Our team felt this was a story worth sharing. So we asked his grandmother if they’d be comfortable letting us share David’s photo, so our community could put a face to this quiet act of kindness.
Meet David.

Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center is joining our long-time partners at St John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish, Bethesda-Chevy Chase to host a Ukrainian Easter Market on March 29, from 9am to 2pm.

📍 6701 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase, MD 20815

Come browse a wonderful selection of handmade items from Ukrainian artisans, including genuine hand-painted pysanky eggs, traditional crafts, textiles, woodwork, and other unique gifts. We’ll also have Ukrainian treats like pastries, honey, coffee, and a homemade baking sale.

We are especially grateful to Sandie Stoianovici, who personally picked out and purchased these beautiful items from Ukrainian artisans.

All proceeds will go to provide equipment for a new Hospital Rehab Center in Ivano-Frankivsk, treating those who have severe injuries, resulting in the loss of mobility or limbs.

Another important delivery from the Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center recently reached Kremenchuk - our first collaboration in Poltava region.

“We never know when the power will go out,” a local volunteer told us. “Sometimes it’s scheduled, but other times it happens suddenly".

That’s why a generator was delivered to a local Point of Resilience - a place where people can come during outages to warm up, charge their phones, drink tea and just feel a little safe.

We also brought toys and clothing to the “Maliutka” orphanage, small things that can still bring smiles and comfort to the children.

Thank you to everyone who supports our efforts! If you’d like to help or learn more, please visit our website: www.uhcus.org

Do you remember how over the past few months the Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center turned holidays and gatherings into lifelines?

We celebrated the New Year together. We organized community bazaars. We hosted master classes - people learning, creating, sharing skills - all with one purpose: to raise funds for defibrillators for evacuation teams and first responders in Ukraine. Because when a heart stops, there are only minutes. And minutes are everything.

And now we have big news. 400 defibrillators are ready to ship.

In a room filled with stacked boxes and the steady sound of packing tape, our tireless volunteers - Suzanne Carbone, Steven Dudzik, Paul Van Akkeren, and Raymond Novak - showed up day after day. They lifted, packed, sorted, and built pallets by hand, because somewhere in Ukraine, an evacuation crew may soon open one of those boxes and use it to save a life.

It’s hard to measure what a community can do from thousands of miles away. But sometimes it looks like this: pallets wrapped and ready to cross an ocean, carrying not just equipment, but the possibility of another heartbeat.

Thanks to everyone who supported our SOUPer Bowl fundraiser, the Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center was able to fund the “Сите місто” (Sated City) project - a place where people in need, many of whom are elderly, can receive a warm meal and find a safe space to warm up after Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

When you see those coming in from the cold, you just want to hug them so tightly and tell them that everything will be okay.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to support us. If you’d like to see the projects you’ve helped make possible or learn more about how to get involved, please visit our website: https://uhcus.org/

Four years ago, in the first hours of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a brief message appeared on our page:

“St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral is open 24/7. We need your prayers.”
In a moment of shock and uncertainty, the cathedral became a gathering place - for prayer, for community, for resolve.

What followed was not only prayer, but sustained and extraordinary support. Parishioners, neighbors, and friends from across the region stepped forward with donations, volunteer hours, and steady solidarity. What began as an emergency response became a long-term commitment.

Four years later, the war continues. So does Ukraine’s resistance.

Ukraine is still standing.
Ukraine is still fighting.
And Ukraine’s future will come.

We pray for Ukraine’s defenders, for the victims of Russian aggression, for the abducted Ukrainian children and their safe return home, for prisoners of war, and for those living under Russian occupation. And our work continues - delivering aid and standing with Ukraine, steady, faithful and committed to a just and lasting peace.

The second time, it felt less like a bake sale and more like tradition. Stacey Rinehart - a friend of the volunteers of the Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center - hosted her Granola Bar Fundraiser again, bringing friends together around something powerful.
All funds will support people at Points of Resilience in Kyiv - safe spaces where residents can access heat, food, electricity after Russia's attacks on energy infrastructure.
After counting the total, Stacey shared:
“You guys are awesome and we were able to raise $1000 to donate to the Ukrainian effort!! I cannot even imagine no heat or electricity with just how it’s been here this winter so can you all imagine it in the -25 degree weather. Thank you all for making this a fabulous fundraiser. Enjoy your granolas now and I’m sure we will be doing another one again ”

Thank you, our dear supporters, for standing with us and helping to bring warmth to Ukraine.

Today we gathered in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Christ who have sacrificed their lives, their health, and their well-being defending our homeland, Ukraine, after Russia launched this brutal and unprovoked full-scale war.

We pray for the fallen, for the wounded, and for all who continue to defend Ukraine. May God grant strength to our people and bring a just and lasting peace.

Right now winter items are on sale across the U.S. and that gives us a powerful opportunity to prepare ahead.

The Washington Ukrainian Humanitarian Center is launching a Winter Clothing Drive to get ready for the next cold season in Ukraine.

This is the perfect time to purchase warm coats, thermal layers, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and winter boots at discounted prices so they can be shipped in advance and distributed before the cold returns.

Preparing now means help arrives on time.
