Persevere

The world as we have known it (or supposed it to be in human terms) is coming to an end. And yet our call of witness and fidelity to Christ remains constant, manifested in ways ever new. As this old world passes away, may we receive grace to persevere in Jesus’ self-offering of love, extending mercy and justice to all as we actively hope in God’s future.

Br. Jonathan Maury
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

“The world as we have known it (or supposed it to be in human terms) is coming to an end. Our time of worldwide pandemic, of climate catastrophe, of endemic violence and injustice, of failed leader…

Verse of the day
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the breath returns to God who gave it.
- Ecclesiastes 12:7

Voice of the day
Whatever you choose to claim / of me is always yours; / nothing is truly mine / except my name. I only / borrowed this dust.
- Stanley Kunitz, “Passing Through”

Prayer of the day
God, with the fleeting nature of our lives, teach us how to refrain from taking more than we need and maximize how we share with each other.

Community

The heart and example of Christian community, whether that be household, parish, or monastery, is the heart and being of God, who is community. Unless we live, and are known to live, in communion and community with one another, our witness to a God who is first and foremost community will fall on deaf ears.

Br. James Koester
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

“For us as Christians, God is not some distant, uninterested and unknowable, divine being, far removed from human life. Rather, God is known and experienced, not only in history, but in the tiny mo…

Verse of the day
As for the things that you have learned and received and heard and noticed in me, do them, and the God of peace will be with you.
- Philippians 4:9

Voice of the day
This God that kills and wages war cannot be the God of love that is revealed through Jesus...It is against this God who kills that we are fighting and resisting.
- Alexya Salvador

Prayer of the day
Strengthen our backbone to speak out against those who proclaim warped versions of you. Lay down your seal of peace.

Conversation

Conversation often helps confirm or distill truth. Imagine the conversation between Elizabeth and Mary, these two related friends who bore witness in wondrous pregnancy. Both bore the weight of a gift and a call with shame and questions. Imagine the stories they told, the questions shared, the listening, tears, encouragement, and loving countenance. They are a model for us.

Br. Luke Ditewig
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

“Mary and Elizabeth lived with ongoing uncertainty and shame by faith. They can inform and encourage us. We hear in Paul’s Letter to the Colossians: “As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe …

Verse of the day
My brothers and sisters, whenever you face various trials, consider it all joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
- James 1:2-3

Voice of the day
Ya'll, I know this world is far from perfect. / I am not the type to mistake a streetlight for the moon. / I know our wounds are deep as the Atlantic. / But every ocean has a shoreline / and every shoreline has a tide / that is constantly returning
- Andrea Gibson, “Birthday”

Prayer of the day
Calmer of the seas, when we are met with facets of fear that threaten our composure, grant us the grace to weather the storm.
