Notice

No one has ever seen God, John tells us, but we can witness love’s movements. Think of hearing leaves rustling in the wind, or seeing gravity pull an apple from a tree to the earth. We cannot directly observe the forces of wind and gravity, but we can notice their effects. God is made visible in the world through love and through ordinary, imperfect people’s choices to say yes to love.

Br. Jamie Nelson
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

Verse of the day
And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God abide forever.
- 1 John 2:17

Voice of the day
From those centuries we human beings bring with us / The simple solutions and songs, / The river bridges and star charts and song harmonies / All in service to a simple idea: / That we can make a house called tomorrow.
- Alberto Ríos, “A House Called Tomorrow”

Prayer of the day
God who meets us in the margins, breathe in us a will that lingers so we can build beyond our present strife.

Verse of the day
Therefore God exalted him even more highly and gave him the name that is above every other name.
- Philippians 2:9

Voice of the day
When you name a thing, you are giving a future. But you are also giving a past. A place in the order of things.
- Hala Alyan, I’ll Tell You When I’m Home (2025)

Prayer of the day
Give us the courage to wrestle with the weight of consequence, to name the things plaguing our world as contexts to what came before.

Turn

No matter what your story is, keep turning back to God. Repent, rearrange, reorient, reintroduce, review, renew, re-whatever yourself back to God. Saint John the Baptist was emphatic about this: we must keep turning back to God.

Verse of the day
If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be.
Deuteronomy 15:7-8

Voice of the day
I could go away from people, but where? Where can I hide from the dark?
Anna Akhmatova, “The Tedium of Recollection”

Prayer of the day
If we find ourselves sorely tempted to retreat within ourselves, propel us into places where the light settles and we understand what we have to give to those around us who need us.

Purpose

As followers of Jesus, our purpose is to be Christ’s witnesses: to state "what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life." After that, we need to get out of the way and allow the Spirit to do its work in bringing people into an encounter with the living Lord.

Br. James Koester
Society of Saint John the Evangelist

“As followers of Jesus, that remains our purpose, indeed it is the purpose of the Church, and the vocation of all the baptized: to be Christ’s witnesses.” Br. James Koester identifies the good news…
