Lakeside Baptist Church Becomes Silver Lake Church
A familiar church in the community is entering a new chapter. Lakeside Baptist Church has officially changed its name to Silver Lake Church, reflecting a renewed energy and a growing partnership with another congregation.
The church remains part of the Southern Baptist denomination but is now working closely with Capital City Church in Topeka. The two congregations have already begun functioning as one church family, with the goal of strengthening ministry in the Silver Lake community.
The transition began a few years ago when longtime pastor Randy Smith began thinking about retirement after decades of service to the church. Smith reached out to Aaron Sheffield of Capital City Church to discuss the possibility of working together. That conversation eventually led to a process to merge the two churches.
The first service of the newly connected church family was held January 4, 2026, with several members from the Silver Lake area joining alongside some from the Topeka congregation.
Today, Aaron Sheffield serves as the church’s pastor, bringing more than 25 years of youth and vocational church ministry experience, including time serving in Tallahassee, Florida. Sheffield holds a Bachelor’s degree in Church Ministry from Clearwater Christian College and a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Regent University.
In his role, Sheffield focuses on helping people connect through community groups and mentoring, while also helping launch Capital City Academy. Aaron and his wife, Allyson, have two daughters, Laurel and Daphne. While the family does not yet live in Silver Lake, they say moving to the community may be possible in the future as opportunities arise. Allyson currently serves as an intervention teacher at Cair Paravel Latin School in Topeka, where their daughters attend school.
Despite the leadership transition, Randy remains very involved in the church, even as he moves toward retirement. Smith has been deeply connected to the congregation for more than four decades. Before becoming the pastor 14 years ago, he was already a longtime member, dating back to when the church was a small mission meeting in a rental building near the Faraz gas station.
Silver Lake Church currently offers Sunday School for adults, youth, and children at 9:15 am, followed by a worship service at 10:30 am. Leaders hope to begin Wednesday night Bible study classes this fall, which may also include programming for kids and youth.
