June 7, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Welcoming and Belonging”

Even in our loneliest hours, our very longing for belonging can feel risky. What will we be asked to sacrifice in order to belong? What harm might we experience if we let others close? What will others think of us if we reveal who we truly are?

It's perhaps easier for many of us to focus on the work of creating welcoming places for others than it is to acknowledge our own needs. Yet our wish to be welcoming is intertwined with and deeply related to our human need for belonging. Neither can be realized separately from the other.

What new possibilities might emerge when we practice letting people in?

This video sermon explores these possibilities.

May 17, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “Joy When the World is on Fire”

Rev. Ali K. C. Bell, of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces will explore why choosing joy is a radical act.

In a time when grief and outrage seem ever-present—when the world feels as though it is burning—how do we make space for joy? This service explores joy not as denial, but as resistance; not as luxury, but as spiritual discipline. Drawing on the wisdom of poets, prophets, and everyday people who have chosen to sing even in the ashes, Rev. Bell will speak of the necessity of joy.

“Joy is not the absence of struggle. It is the fire that keeps us alive within it,” Rev. Bell said.

Rev. Ali K. C. Bell, is a Black, Neurodivergent, Transgender man (he/Rev. Ali). In August 2025 he became the minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces.

Before moving to Las Cruces he served as the Minister of Congregational Life and Engagement at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, MD, and as Chaplain for the Unitarian Universalists at Riderwood Covenanting Community in Silver Spring MD.

He holds a Master of Divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School and a Master of Social Work from the University of Central Florida, and is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister. Rev. Bell brings over 35 years of experience advocating for under-resourced communities across the Mid-Atlantic and the Regional Southeast.

Ben Rasmussen, is Executive Director of The Commons Center for Food Security and Sustainability and a regional food systems leader with over a decade of experience advancing food security, economic development and community resilience in rural and frontier communities across southwest New Mexico.

His work began on a remote farm in Catron County and evolved into broader regional leadership, including co-founding the Southwest New Mexico Food System Alliance (formerly the regional food policy council).

Rasmussen is the founder of the Frontier Food Hub, which he developed into a nationally recognized, award-winning model for local aggregation, distribution and market access in geographically isolated regions. He has also served as CEO of a national advocacy organization, working at the intersection of policy philanthropy, and systems change to support more equitable and resilient remote community development initiatives across the country.

At The Commons, Ben Rasmussen is focused on strengthening core operations, expanding programmatic offerings and deepening community engagement. He is particularly interested in the long-term potential of community-based and volunteer-driven interventions to address chronic food insecurity, and in building systems that translate local capacity into sustained impact. Having partnered with The Commons for years prior to stepping into the executive director role, he brings both continuity and a forward-looking vision to the organization’s work in Grant County and the broader region.

May 3, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – "Learning to Fly”

Author Diane Kleiss will talk about the process she went through while writing about her art journey in her book ‘Learning to Fly’.

“That would not have happened without my years of journal writing helping to trigger my memories,” Kleiss said.

“I was an artist from the time I could hold a crayon. This is a memoir about my lifelong pursuit to fill my life with artistic endeavors, to keep reaching for the next workshop, exhibit, or gallery representation around the country.”

Diane Kleiss was born in an Iowa Heartland farming community. After a move to Minnesota and then college at the University of Minnesota in Duluth she received a BFA in painting, a minor in art history and a K-12 teaching degree in 1989.

Another move in 1994 to Tucson AZ she directed more attention to her studio and building a body of work. She taught art in public schools and at several art centers in Minnesota and Tucson.

In 2008, after years using oil, acrylic and clay, she turned to painting and sculpting with beeswax, an ancient encaustic medium.

“The beeswax substance draws the viewer’s attention to our environment with an accent on the man-made stresses to our eco system,” Kleiss said.

In 2013 she moved to Silver City and has exhibited her work in galleries and solo exhibits around the country, featured in Art Magazines and served on several art boards including the International Encaustic Artists board.

In February 2020 she was awarded the Edwina Milner Women in the Arts Award with a forty year retrospective at WNMU McCray Art Gallery. Her studio is open every year for the Silver City Art Associations Studio Tour.

April 26, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “Attention to Healing”

Rev. Tina DeYoe of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Los Alamos will talk about healing during this Sunday’s service.

“We pay attention to healing, our individual and collective healing. What does it mean to heal? According to Dr. Gabor Mate, "Healing is actually the capacity to hold pain". So then, what does it mean to hold pain and how do we hold and release pain? In this Sunday's service we will explore embodied practices that can help us cope with our pain,” Rev. De Yoe said.

With a love of social justice and service, Rev. Tina De Yoe became an ordained Unitarian Universalist Minister in October 2023. She serves as the Minister Pro Tem for the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos.

Rev. De Yoe comes from a lineage of educators and ministers in the Presbyterian (USA) denomination. She received her BA in Religious Studies and Minor in Psychology from Presbyterian College in South Carolina. While in college in 2006, she studied Immigration Issues, Borderculture, Mexican History, Liberation Theology, Latin American History, and Spanish on the Border of the US/Mexico with the organization Borderlinks, in Tucson, AZ.

After college, Rev. De Yoe attended Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated in 2010 with a Master of Divinity. Upon graduation, she spent a year in Guatemala volunteering in a women’s shelter, while learning Spanish and living with a Mayan family. After coming back to the US, she entered a year-¬long chaplain resident program at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

It was during this year that she first encountered Unitarian Universalism. She was immediately enthralled by the social activism she saw addressing immigration issues and the open support of the LGBTQ+ community. It was at the Unitarian Universalist congregation in Knoxville, TN that Rev. De Yoe found her faith home.

She moved to NM in 2014 for the Director of Lifespan Religious Education job in Los Alamos and now serves as their Minister. She loves hiking, traveling, camping, photography, cross stitch, singing and her cat Xena Warrior Princess and her dog Gnar.

All ages are welcome to attend the Sunday program.

April 25, at 2:00 pm, 3845 North Swan Street – Special screening of “Last Days on Trinity Lake”

Every year, thousands of people in lot-lease communities are displaced by predatory investors who buy the land beneath homes—still commonly but inaccurately called “mobile homes" and extract millions of dollars in annual revenue from working families and people on fixed incomes. Their model often relies on steep rent increases, deferred maintenance, and, in some cases, community closure when the land can yield greater profits elsewhere. This has become a common way corporate investors extract wealth from ordinary people who are simply trying to meet their essential needs.

Residents in New Mexico face particular vulnerabilities due to weak laws that fail to inform consumers or protect their land tenancies. In comparison, grazing leases are protected in such a way that New Mexico cattle enjoy more secure tenancy than these homeowners.

For the past sixteen years, New Mexico elected officials have been asked to take steps to protect these communities that represent the largest source of unsubsidized affordable housing in New Mexico and across the country. More recently, Silver City elected representatives have also been asked.

On April 25, a screening of “Last Days on Lake Trinity” will highlight these issues. The documentary examines the impact of displacement on individuals and communities.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion on solutions that can be addressed locally, statewide, and nationally.

A representative from Congressman Vasquez's office will discuss the Keep Mobile Homes Affordable Act, which calls for an investigation into market manipulation and price gouging. Maria Griego, the Economic Equity Director with the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty (NMCLP), will discuss state legislative efforts and class actions brought by NMCLP.

April 12, at 10:00 am, 3845 North Swan Street – “The Mystery Novel and Social Justice”

Author and Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City member, Marty Eberhardt, will use readings from her latest mystery novel, Crime on the Coast” to demonstrate how she deals with the social justice issues of racism and the entitlement of the wealthy.

Mystery novels satisfy the reader because justice wins out in the end. But they also can serve to highlight social justice concerns.

Marty Eberhardt’s third novel in the Bea Rivers series, Crime on the Coast, deals with issues of racism and the entitlement of the wealthy in the format of a traditional mystery. Who might be guilty of pushing a woman from 300-foot cliffs in exclusive La Jolla, California, and why? A small botanical garden conference yields plenty of suspects.

Eberhardt will read passages from the book to illustrate her points. She will sell and sign copies of Crime on the Coast after the presentation.

Marty Eberhardt is a former botanical garden executive director who now lives in Silver City. Her first two mysteries have garnered several awards. She is an active volunteer with the Gila Native Plant Society and Great Old Broads for Wilderness, and she enjoys the wild flora, fauna and humans of this region.

All ages are welcome to attend the Sunday program.

Rev. Carole Czujko is a retired Unitarian minister. For over 20 years she worked mostly in the tech sector. In midlife she changed direction to study the world’s faith traditions and mythologies in seminary. She has served as a hospital chaplain and congregational clergy.
