What We Believe

"Sola Gratia", "Sola Fide", "Sola Scriptura" – Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone were the three marks of the Protestant Reformation in Europe in the 16th century. Those three things still help to define what we believe as Presbyterians. It is by grace alone, that is by God’s initiative and God’s enabling, that we come to know and follow Jesus as Savior and Master. God open

s our blind eyes to see Jesus as the giver of life. "But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ" (Ephesians 2:4-5). It is through faith alone that God accepts us as righteous people. Nothing we do is good enough for us to earn our salvation. Nothing we do can compel God to accept us as his people. It is by faith in Jesus’ dying for us that our sins are forgiven. It is by faith in Jesus’ rising again for us that we have eternal life. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God–not the results of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Scripture alone is our authority for how we are to think and speak and live as God’s people. The Spirit of God was present and at work in those who wrote the Scriptures. The Spirit of God continues to be present and active as the Scriptures are read and preached. The Scriptures are God’s word to his people the Church. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16). With the Church throughout the centuries we believe that God is revealed in Scripture as three persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit, dwelling eternally in a perfect union of love and glory. The tri-personal God is the one who is active in both creation and salvation. We believe that the Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God who are called to demonstrate God’s love, truth and righteousness in all that they say and in all that they do.
