Dear First UMC,

It’s Labor Day Weekend—the unofficial end of summer—which means fall is here! (I know it’s hard to believe while we’re still in the middle of a heat wave!)

But whether or not it feels like fall outside, our fall activities are just around the corner. Last week, during Blessing of the Backpacks, we passed out a fall “Save the Date” list with everything happening over the next few months. I hope you grabbed one—but, more importantly, I hope you’re already thinking about who you can bring along with you!

Fall is always a busy and exciting season at First UMC, and there are so many opportunities to worship, grow, serve, and simply have fun together. From our annual Fall Family Festival to our new Journey worship night, Spiritual Growth Groups kicking off, and our third annual Project Connect missional event, there really is something for everyone.

One of my favorite things about our church is that we don’t just gather on Sunday mornings—we are a community that shows up for one another and for our neighbors. So as you look at that calendar, don’t just ask, “What do I want to do?” Ask, “Who can I invite to come with me?”

Because that’s one of the ways we Love Like Jesus.

I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us this fall!

Grace and peace,

Pastor Jennifer

5 things worth the money trend…CHURCH EDITION!

Everyone on our feeds is sharing the items they bought that were “worth every penny.” But the most valuable things in life don’t come with a price tag.

Here are 5 things that are 100% worth it, completely free, and waiting for you this Sunday:

1️⃣ God’s Love: You cannot earn or buy it, but God offers it as a gift.
2️⃣ Grace: God’s power—given to us as a gift—drawing you in, saving you, and perfecting you in love.
3️⃣ A relationship with God: No subscription or membership fee is required.
4️⃣ True Freedom: Break away from guilt, shame, and sin without a price tag.
5️⃣ Lasting Joy: A deep, holy peace that money could never purchase.

You don’t need a premium membership or a credit card for these. Just a heart open to receive the gifts of life God has for you ❤️

🐾 Because of your generosity, we were able to give a $10,000 donation to the Bulldog Pantry!

We are so thankful for the Bulldog Pantry and the incredible work they do to care for the needs of students in our Sikeston community. We pray this gift helps make a meaningful difference for students and families who need a little extra support.

This is another way we live our our mission to Love Like Jesus❤️

Dear First UMC,
After the first sermon in our “Ask Anything” series my husband Ryan told me that someone asked him after our Traditions service if I was running for political office. “Why?” he asked, “because Jennifer didn’t really answer that question directly!” We both thought this was such a funny comment!

But really, in a way, they were absolutely right. I have been calling the sermons in this series “answers” but in reality, many of the questions you submitted anonymously don’t have clear answers. And the best I can do—or at least what I’m trying to do—is help to reframe the questions in ways that help us see them as faithful responses to a sincere desire to follow God. I think so often we are scared to ask questions, and yet, it is usually in asking that we go deeper in our faith and knowledge of God’s love.

As we wrap up the series this Sunday, I’m so sorry to say that it might not feel like the questions are tied into neat bows. This one is a little messy because this week we are tackling the most asked topic. And there’s a reason why it showed up so much: it affects almost every part of our lives. It’s something that people have been wrestling with for centuries and it continues to be a central theme in many of our faith journeys.

While I might not be able to “answer” it, my hope is that we can all grow in our understanding of how this question can help us more faithfully live out the Gospel. I hope you will be a part of this conversation by joining us in worship this weekend.

AND on Sunday we will celebrate the Blessing of the Backpacks—when all students, teachers, administrators and staff are invited forward for a special prayer over their school year. It’s one of my favorite things we do each year—full of joy and a little holy chaos—and I know you’ll be glad you were a part of it.

See you Sunday!

Grace and peace,
Pastor Jennifer
