SPEAK

The word “speak” reminds me of the story of Moses when God asked him to speak to Pharaoh. Moses begins to make up excuses not to do what God has asked him. Immediately, he says, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” (Exodus 4:10 (NIV))

It strikes me as rather odd that the Bible doesn’t mention Moses’ handicap before this incident. And that Moses would not have known that God took his speech impediment into account when He gave him instructions and made provision for any shortcomings. It’s no wonder that the Bible says, “Then the LORD’s anger burned against Moses . . .” God had already prepared Aaron to help Moses with the speaking.

Too often, we marginalize God’s ability and His omniscience when it comes to doing what He asks us. We, too, begin to list out reasons why we can’t take on the task. We don’t have time, we’re not called to do that, we don’t have the ”know-how,” and so on. It’s as if we don’t realize that God knows everything about us and has taken into consideration those things we are not adept at doing, and has others to help us

Look at the disciples—few were skilled orators or educated. Yet, God entrusted to them one of His most valuable possessions—the Gospel. They spoke truth and repentance to lost souls in their sphere of influence. The Holy Spirit gave them the words to say and helped them along the way. They willingly took on the task and did the best they could with what God gave them.

A lesson for us is that there is no task too big or difficult if God is in it!

MEASURE

I was intrigued by the words about a New York Times bestseller--” Some love this book, 'THE MEASURE,' by Nikki Erlick, and others hate it.” I wondered--should I read it? I was very cautious, not knowing where the fictional storyline would end. One thing was for sure—if it turned bizarre or gross at any point, that would be the end of me reading it.

There was no spoiler alert--all I was told was that the world receives a mysterious wooden box containing a string. The string measured people's lifespans. What would the consequences be of knowing the length of their lifetime? What about you and me? Would we look inside the box and want to know? What would we do? Would we treat others differently?

I ordered the book. My fascination with my lifespan hit me on a deeper level when I was faced with the brutal fact that I buried my twenty-seven-year-old son. He died unexpectedly in a Black Hawk crash. You could say his string was short. Not as short as others, but to this mom, short, nonetheless. Had he known, what would he or we have changed?

How about you? Most of us don’t know when our last moment will be. If we knew, would we be more intentional in our priorities, spend more time with loved ones, relocate, or even change jobs? Would spiritual things and the afterlife matter?

I have already settled this matter. My time is precious; call me a “short stinger” at 66 years of age. I carefully decide what is most important, and I am very picky about what I allow into my mind. The Bible and what God says are of the utmost importance.

I did not need to read “The Measure,” however, I did, and I want to take this opportunity to give you my Christian view. In James 4:14 (NIV), we read: “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Ask yourself—am I making an impact? Do I consider life a gift God gave me, no matter its length? Am I leaving something behind to tell the world I was here? Will I receive the gift of eternal life, a string without ending that is only available through the death and resurrection of Jesus?

I urge you to settle this matter.

Time Wasted

“I surrender. You can have it all!” Is this a stagecoach robbery? No! It’s my cry of desperation to God about my social media addiction. I want to give it up.

Many years ago, I ended a waste of time when I got rid of cable TV. However, recently, that little device called a cell phone has been stealing my time again. Some days, I am stuck scrolling for hours on worthless things that don't matter. This interferes with my time. God only knows what harm this usage will cause me and what damage it will do to children's developing brains. I need to figure out how to make better choices. I need help. Do you? What about rehab? No, we need God's help.

Solomon was considered the wisest man who ever lived. He wrote, "Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things" (Psalm 119:37)long ago. Boy, was he right! These words also apply, “Turn my eyes away from useless things” to our times. We need to examine our hearts and minds. Is social media stealing our time, and/or are there other things doing the same? What do we need to surrender? Our freedom comes from acknowledging our problems and seeking help from God through prayer.

I am determined to make room for God--memorize Psalm 119:37, choose wisely, and evaluate what matters most within my limited time on earth. “You don’t even know what tomorrow will bring—what your life will be! For you are like smoke that appears for a little while, then vanishes.” James 4-14( HCSB)

Time is precious, and once wasted, we never get it back. Our lives matter. Let's be aware of what we tell ourselves to make it okay to waste time looking at worthless things. Then, stop a thought before it turns into action, a habit, a character, and destiny.

Let's turn our eyes away from worthless, meaningless, useless shows, trinkets, toys, and games that distract us and divert our attention from God and the only life that matters.

GOOD GIFTS

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father
of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17 (ESV)

Have you ever been disappointed with a gift? Perhaps you were hoping for some special thing but instead received something less.

Jesus was a disappointment. The people of Israel were waiting for a Messiah who would save them from the oppression of the Roman government. But instead, He died on the cross. God did not give the gift of freedom from the tyranny of Rome. He gave the gift of freedom from the tyranny of sin that doomed all mankind.

We thank God for every gift we enjoy. That is easy! But what about when life’s circumstances are difficult? Can we still thank Him when we don’t recognize His gift is good?

Every good gift is from above. What about when our relationships are broken?
Every good gift is from above. What about when our children break our hearts with their choices?
Every good gift is from above. What about when our friend receives a terminal diagnosis?
Every good gift is from above.

We may ask, “Has God forgotten about me? Has God turned His back on me? Does God give bad gifts?” Not at all. A good and perfect gift is the gift we need at that moment to bring glory to God. God’s purpose is not to give us a life of comfort and pleasure but to conform us to His image.

A perfect gift
molds character,
increases perseverance,
teaches us to endure,
develops compassion, and
strengthens faith.

By calling God “the Father of lights,” James reminds us that God created light out of darkness and chaos. From that first day, when God said, “Let there be light,” the sun illuminates the world every day without fail. We can count on God. The moon and the stars stick to predictable tracks. With God, there is not even a variation or a shadow. He always loves us and the gifts He gives are always good.

Let’s thank God for His good and perfect gifts and for His constant character.

CHANGE- JESUS NEVER CHANGES!

Unbelievably, he should have been dead. Hospice had been called, and imminent funeral arrangements were put in place. He stopped eating, was weak, and was ready to leave this earth to face his maker, but now he was in front of us, back in church. What a dynamic change with a message of change.

With a pen in hand, I was glued to my seat, capturing every Bible reference and word he spoke.

Everyone who knew about Marvin's near demise paid close attention to him as he gave God’s message. He included many examples of possible new capabilities. For centuries, what people considered right has now been regarded as wrong. Nonetheless, Jesus Christ never changes. He is reliable and never changes. In these crazy-changing times, we are tossed around from every side and wonder what’s up and down. However, Jesus is the same, and there is power in His name.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 (GNT)

“But when you pray, you must believe and not doubt. "Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is driven and blown about by the wind,” James 1:6 (GNT)

Marvin’s message continued—so, pray in Jesus's name. His name is all-powerful. He can do the impossible. Jesus can heal, save, and deliver today. Marvin gave us a handout of thirty-eight miracles of healing listed in the Bible. Jesus healed lepers, the blind, and many other illnesses, and still can today. He answered prayers--we all saw the evidence of the man on his deathbed--alive among us instead of in the grave. Let us rid ourselves of doublemindedness, speak the name of Jesus, set aside our unbelief, and rise to declare to others that there is power in the name of Jesus.

That morning, I was inspired to rise to a new level of faith. So, I encourage you today to call on the unchanging Jesus Christ, who is available to all of us. Place your trust in him, focus on how He healed and saved in the past, and believe. He can do it for you, too.

Hey Friends:
I want to share a special moment with you.
In the book industry, it’s standard procedure for an author to invite 20-30 people to be part of an “influencer team” who will help promote the book. How an author works with that team and how they get the word out is up to the author, the team, and the publisher. We have all kinds of creative ideas up our sleeves on how to make that happen and every author’s approach is unique. We’re creative people, right?
I’m choosing to have a Zoom party the day of each book release where anyone who wants to come can gather for an hour of celebration, author interviews, giveaways (oh the giveaways are good!), and praise for God has done. No I don’t know any other author who has done this. Maybe I’m being creative or maybe I don’t get out much. But! I think this will be so much fun.
(Next Tuesday (January 28 6PM PST/9PM EST) is the Zoom party for my new book, With Open Ears, and I’d love to meet you “face to face” that evening. You can sign up to get the Zoom link here:
Where can you purchase With Open Ears?
Amazon
Christianbook
Kregel Publications
Other online and local bookstores
Can you share these links and the Zoom party sign up link with friends and on Facebook? Absolutely. I would love it if you did! ANYONE is invited to be a part of the Zoom party.

MY PRAYER

“Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.” Psalm 32:11 (KJV)

Heavenly Father,

HOPE! That is my prayer for the United States as a new administration takes over for the next four years. Let’s pray that you will bless the new people, who were put in charge.

We ask you, Lord, to help us see the positive side of politics and pray that your hope for our country will come true. We put our trust and faith in you, Lord, to stop all negative events, bring all Americans together, and bless our country.

Forgive us for years of negativeness and doubt. You are still King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Thank you, Lord, for our future.

In your Son's precious name. Amen

Free Spirited—Flying

“Hey, stop that! You can’t do that!” My response to that is, “Watch me!” The days are long gone, left behind, of being afraid and timid, wanting to be invisible or not standing out in a crowd, and filled to the rim with low self-esteem. The time to escape from my shell had come—I was created to fly. No longer held back by the opinions of others, which mattered less and less, I was finally free—out of my cage.

How did it happen? The day I decided to follow Jesus instead of being a man-pleaser, I made it my goal to be a God-pleaser. The fear of man is a snare. Proverbs warns us. It’s a trap, a net, to hold us in its clutches. I was, however, made to swim against the current, to be an original, a freethinker, and a nonconformist.
I had to step out of my comfort zone, one baby step at a time, renewing my mind, and walking in my freedom. Jesus said in John 8:36 (NIV), “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Those steps were followed by happiness and fulfillment. Having a purpose makes a difference!

A lone wolf, a maverick, labeled “Out There” is sometimes needed in a world that has gone “WOKE.” Our stability and confidence should be “…If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31 (NIV).

I am inspired and my wings are fueled by the examples of the first-century church and by people like Dietrich Bonhoeffer and The White Rose Society, a World War II resistance group, who held firm to their faith regardless of danger and death.

Does that sound like I have no fun? On the contrary, I love to laugh and place bling stickers on my red-frame glasses. And, you can see my bling sandals miles away. Hey, I am here, and I have something to say. I am no longer afraid to do so. The opinion that God has of me matters most. Make that your goal and I will watch you fly.

THE COLOR GOLD

Holding your hand, I will place an object that is small and round upon your palm, a bride and groom. I will tell you about its glistening beauty and its use. It is a wedding ring, placed upon the finger. The color signifies the solidarity and commitment between two people.

I will lead you to a tall pole and as you touch the surface you can feel it towering above our heads. I will tell you that even though its touch is cold, its beauty signifies light and luster so that all around it can see light when there is darkness.

As we walk into the sunlight, I will ask you to turn your face upward to feel the heat as it radiates off your skin. Its glow is a brighter shade than the small round object or the light on the tall pole.
Then upon your chest, we will place our hands over your heart. Feel the excitement and joy as your heart beats. Feel the excitement that flashes through your mind—those are colors of gold.

Gold is strong and solid, it can be round or flat or be small soft flakes and unnoticeable, that can be crushed between your fingers.

Gold is warm and bright, but sometimes it can be cold. Gold can be like the sun on our skin or the excitement beating in our chest. But real “gold” is knowing Christ and that every moment we live in His presence is truly “golden.”

GOLD
Thoughts to ponder – (the final writing of our exercise of describing the color gold to a blind person.)

Imagine that the color gold is like:

The sun warmly caressing your face on a refreshing spring morning
after a cold winter.

Your exploding tastebuds as you leisurely savor each sip of freshly squeezed lemons in a tall glass of ice-cold water on a hot, lazy, crazy afternoon.

The joyful happy sounds of children laughing and prattling as they gleefully frolic in muddy puddles left by summer rain.

The cool smooth texture of silk as your hand slides over the fabric—how beautiful it would feel as a piece of apparel for a special occasion.

The gentle sensation of two hands touching—an inaudible message of “I love you!”

The faint wafting scent of a familiar after-shave or perfume—a memory awakened of a precious loved one gone to be with Jesus.

All these instances are gold, but it is more palpable in the presence and majesty of God as He lovingly whispers, “You are forgiven, you
are a new creation,” at the beginning of your journey with Him, and then at the end when He announces, “… ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” Matthew 25:23 (NIV)
