Redeemer Lutheran Church LCMS, Sidney, OH Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod Ever wondered what a Lutheran Service is like?

12/07/2025

The Lutheran Reformation was a conservative reformation. Longstanding church customs and traditions that served good ends were purified from abuses and retained. Thus the LCMS strongly urges all its congregations to retain the order of the Divine Service, as well as confession and absolution, psalms, lessons, clear Gospel preaching, the creeds, the Lord’s Prayer, the order of the Lord’s Supper and especially the Lord’s own words, reverent reception, Aaronic blessing. We are not the church of what’s happening now. We are the catholic church of all ages gone right. I often note that, no matter where I travel in the world, I find all these elements in a Lutheran service. No matter the language, I’m never lost in a Lutheran service. That’s certainly the way it should be among us.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 56:1, 6–8
1Thus says the LORD:
“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed. . . .
6“And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD,
to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD,
and to be his servants,
everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
and holds fast my covenant—
7these I will bring to my holy mountain,
and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
for all peoples.”
8The Lord GOD,
who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares,
“I will gather yet others to him
besides those already gathered.”

Psalm Psalm 67; antiphon: v. 5
1May God be gracious to us and | bless us*
and make his face to shine up- | on us,
2that your way may be | known on earth,*
your saving power among all | nations.
3Let the peoples praise you, | O God;*
let all the peoples | praise you!
4Let the nations be glad and | sing for joy,*
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations up- | on earth.
5Let the peoples praise you, | O God;*
let all the peoples | praise you!
6The earth has yielded its | increase;*
God, our God, shall | bless us.
7God shall | bless us;*
let all the ends of the earth | fear him!

Epistle Romans 11:1–2a, 13–15, 28–32
1I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. . . .
13Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry 14in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. 15For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? . . .
28As regards the gospel, they are enemies of God for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. 29For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30Just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, 31so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now receive mercy. 32For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

Holy Gospel Matthew 15:21–28
21Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26And he answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

Alleluia and Verse Psalm 147:2–3
Alleluia. The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Alleluia.

Collect of the Day
Almighty and everlasting Father, You give Your children many blessings even though we are undeserving. In every trial and temptation grant us steadfast confidence in Your loving-kindness and mercy; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Prayer of the Church
Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
20 August 2023

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the house of the Lord, that it may be a house of prayer and we a people of prayer, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the Church, that she may steadfastly proclaim the irrevocable gifts and calling of God, that the disobedient may receive mercy, and that those who hear may become branches grafted onto the true vine, Jesus Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all honest work and occupations and our good use of the fruits of our labors; for generosity toward those in need; and for the tithes and offerings that accompany our sacrifice of praise, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the government and those who protect us, that they may keep justice and do righteousness, carrying out their duties in accord with God’s will, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the sick and afflicted, those beset with grief and sorrow, pain and any trouble, that the Lord would be pleased to answer their cries for the sake of Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those who are about to receive Christ’s body and blood from this altar, that these crumbs may strengthen us in faith and love, united with God and neighbor, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Hear us, heavenly Father, for the sake of Christ Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY
Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
August 20, 2023

In Christ there is no east or west (LSB 653)

1 In Christ there is no east or west,
In Him no south or north;
But one great fellowship of love
Throughout the whole wide earth.

2 With God there is no tribe or race;
In Him we all are one,
He loves us as His children through
Our faith in His dear Son.

3 So, brothers, sisters, praise His name
Who died to set us free
From sin, division, hate and shame,
From spite and enmity!

4 Join hands, disciples of the faith,
Whate'er your race may be;
Who serves my Father as His child
Is surely kin to me.

5 In Christ now meet both east and west;
In Him meet south and north.
All Christian souls are one in Him
Throughout the whole wide earth.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 55:1–5
1“Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
2Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
3Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
4Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
5Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the LORD your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.”

Epistle Romans 9:1–13
1I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9For this is what the promise said: “About this time next year I will return and Sarah shall have a son.” 10And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call— 12she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

Holy Gospel Matthew 14:13–21
13Now when Jesus heard [about the death of John], he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” 18And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Alleluia and Verse Psalm 78:25
Alleluia. Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance. Alleluia.

Collect of the Day
Heavenly Father, though we do not deserve Your goodness, still You provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your gifts, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Prayer of the Church
Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
6 August 2023

In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the people of God, that in the steadfast love of their Lord they may give thanks and have confidence that no danger, trouble or hardship can separate them from the love of Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For all pastors and church workers, that the Lord would bless their service and bless all who are considering and preparing for church work, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

In gratitude for all God provides for our bodies and lives, that we might not covet or turn elsewhere for what comes from His hand alone, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For eyes to see the Lord’s mercies anew every morning, and for grateful hearts to receive and share our Lord’s rich and daily grace with the needy and His Church, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those who serve us in government and protect us in our communities, that they may discern the right path and lead us with honor and integrity, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the sick, troubled, grieving and dying, that they may receive grace according to God’s merciful will, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For strength and endurance, that we may not despair but have confidence in our Father’s steadfast love, especially as we receive Christ’s body and blood in His Sacrament, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

O Lord, let us seek You while You may be found, call upon You in the day of salvation and be prepared by Your mercy for the day of judgment; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

O Living Bread from heaven (LSB 642)

1 O Living Bread from heaven,
How well You feed Your guest!
The gifts that You have given
Have filled my heart with rest.
Oh, wondrous food of blessing,
Oh, cup that heals our woes!
My heart, this gift possessing,
With praises overflows.

2 My Lord, You here have led me
To this most holy place
And with Yourself have fed me
The treasures of Your grace;
For You have freely given
What earth could never buy,
The bread of life from heaven,
That now I shall not die.

3 You gave me all I wanted;
This food can death destroy.
And You have freely granted
The cup of endless joy.
My Lord, I do not merit
The favor You have shown,
And all my soul and spirit
Bow down before Your throne.

4 Lord, grant me then, thus strengthened
With heav'nly food, while here
My course on earth is lengthened,
To serve with holy fear.
And when You call my spirit
To leave this world below,
I enter, through Your merit,
Where joys unmingled flow.

Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 7:6–9
6“You are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, 8but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”

Epistle Romans 8:28–39
28We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Holy Gospel Matthew 13:44–52
44[Jesus said:] “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
45“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
47“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
51“Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

Alleluia and Verse Matthew 13:35b
Alleluia. I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world. Alleluia.

Collect of the Day
Almighty and everlasting God, give us an increase of faith, hope, and love, that, receiving what You have promised, we may love what You have commanded; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
