📝 The Sermon Notes - March 15, 2026

Are we pursuing what is good, beautiful, and true in our lives?

In 1 Samuel 25, we see Nabal, an independent, self-made and self-interested man reject a request for generosity, insulting David. David doesn’t take it well and is ready for violence. Nabal brings out the worst in David.

But Nabal’s wife Abigail intervenes, showing us that beautiful living calls us back to God. Abigail sends gifts and offers humility and grace. She recognizes David’s authority and brings down the temperature, de-escalating the situation

How can WE live more beautiful lives?

- Identify our Nabals (what draws out coarseness, hatred, anger in our lives?)
- Seek out Abigails (spend time with those who remind us of God’s beauty, goodness, and truth)
- Live like Jesus (keep studying Jesus’ life, reflecting Jesus’ love)

Beautiful living is God-centered and other-focused. Let’s live more beautiful, Jesus-shaped lives.

📸: Elena (left) officially joined our church in December and came forward today for baptistm! Martha (right) brings flowers from her garden to adorn our foyer every week- this week it was her beautiful pink azaleas. Both ladies are great examples of Abigail living - shining brightly and calling us back to God. 💐

Jeff's photo of a butterfly from the urban garden in New Orleans on the Youth Spring Break trip pairs nicely with this morning's "Hope for Dust" Lenten Devotional. Ephesians 2:24 tells us to "put on [our] new nature, created to be like God- truly righteous and holy." We leave behind our caterpillar ways- we now have the wings of freedom in Christ! As the devotional reads on, we are encouraged in this freedom:

"Are you running your race as who you once were?
Step out of your burden and see it for what it is— the past.
You have been set you free. Christ has taken you from death to life and made you new.
It’s time to give up what you once were and celebrate who you have become."

For this newness and this freedom, we give thanks today! May we walk in the light of that truth today and everyday. Onward, church!

If so, we've got two great opportunities coming up in our Women's Ministry at First Baptist Shreveport that to scratch that itch!

1️⃣. Sign ups are OPEN for our Women's Retreat at the Brubaker Cabin in Langley, Arkansas, April 10-12th. If unwinding and having a blast worshiping God and soaking in the beauty of creation on the banks of the gorgeous Little Missouri River sounds good to you, do not delay. It's only $30 and we'd love to have you along.

2️⃣. A brand new 8 week women's Bible study begins on March 17th! The study is by multiple beloved authors exploring the book of Proverbs. If you'd like to join "The Way of Wisdom," the first meetings are Tuesday, March 17th at 5:00 pm or Wednesday, March 18th at 9:30 am in the parlor.

Send us a DM or visit our website for more information! We hope to see you there!

✨It's giving HOPE! ✨

Our youth and youth leaders are doing great work in New Orleans this week and we hope you're keeping them in your prayers! Here are some ways you can pray for them:

- safety for all traveling and for all activities
- strength & energy as they work hard at many service projects throughout the week
- courage to share the gospel & be the light of Christ for all those they encounter
- a time for work and a time for rest & to be filled by the Spirit
- spiritual growth and growing closer to Christ
- Kingdom work to be done
- an extra measure of stamina, endurance and joy for our adult leaders on the trip

We love you .shv.youth ! Keep up the great work! 👏👏👏

📝 The Sermon Notes - March 8, 2026

Maybe the comfort and security that we all crave is actually spiritually dangerous for us.

In 1 Samuel 24:4-7, we see David in a cave in the wilderness of En Gedi showing great restraint and honor to Saul when it would have been so easy to justify taking his life. Because of his faith and trust in the Lord, David acts with forgiveness and mercy.

Forgiveness transforms the forgiver.

AND

Forgiveness sometimes transforms the forgiven.

There is no guarantee that the people we forgive change but responding with goodness, mercy and love is not about ignoring the actions but refusing to become evil in response to those actions.

Are you harboring bitterness, resentment or hate in your heart? How can you make things right this week? How can we follow the example of David and the Son of David by doing everything in our power to make things right?

Jeff's sermon on Sunday highlighted the importance of God-centered friendship in our lives. Turns out, FBC Shreveport is the PERFECT place to start making these kinds of connections. Our night at the Shreveport Mudbugs game this past Friday was a great example of the kind of fun and friendship available through church community. Over time, these relationships become like a healthy and thriving family unit keeping our hearts warm in what can sometimes be a cold world.

If you're looking for real world places and spaces to forge new friendships, consider your local church. At FBC Shreveport, we're waiting for you with open arms and we're saving you a seat.

For the deep, life long and abiding friendships, for the brand new friendships we've forged, AND for the friendships yet to come, we give thanks today and ask God to bless these relationship as we go and grow together! Praise be! ⛪

Tag your pals, your besties, your squad, your buddies and thank God for the gift they are in your life today!
