Our Blessed Mother didn't turn away from her Son's Passion, but remained faithfully present, sharing in His suffering. Her quiet fortitude shows us what it looks like to trust God even when our hearts are broken with sorrow.

"We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world."

Today we observe the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a feast day observed in Rome beginning in the seventh century. This Feast commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross, which St. Helena discovered on September 14, 320, and preserved in Jerusalem. It later fell into the hands of the Persians after they conquered Jerusalem. It was returned to Jerusalem by Emperor Heralius in 629.

While the ancient world viewed the cross as a symbol of shame and defeat, Christ transformed it into the ultimate sign of sacrificial love and everlasting victory. Through His sacrifice on Calvary, death was conquered, and new life was given to the world.

In today's Gospel, Peter asks Jesus how many times he must forgive his brother, wondering if seven times is enough. Jesus answers that we must forgive 'not seven times but seventy-seven times,' sharing the parable of the debtor whose massive debt was canceled by his king. (Matthew 18:22). God's mercy toward us has no limits, and He calls us to extend that same patient forgiveness to others, even when it feels difficult.

Across generations, Catholics have found comfort in calling upon the holy name of Mary during times of illness, grief, and temptation. St. Bernard of Clairvaux famously advised the faithful that if the winds of temptation arise, to look at the star and call upon Mary. Her motherly prayers wrap around us whenever we feel weak or weary. Let's remember to hold one another in prayer today as brothers and sisters in Christ. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
