On Monday, July 19 the team divided into two groups finished up the painting at Lahaina United Methodist Church and worked at a 90 year old single senior to clean up her house. The work of the group was appreciated and as we finished our work for the trip the team accomplished all our projects and touch the lives of many people.

On Sunday we attended Lahaina United Methodist Church for worship in the morning. Went to a food truck park, then did some shopping in the afternoon. We ended up at Kaanapali Beach during the late afternoon and then headed back to a luau for supper. During the whole trip Sophia Findell was the co-leader and did much of the in person leadership while I did much of the administrative work for the trip. The adults who participated in the trip Jessica and Dave Findell, Melissa and Aaron Navratil, and Teal and Elliot Stefanik where of valuable help with the projects and preparing lunches and dinners for the team. Especially wonderful to have on the trip accompanying the team was Gianna Stefanik, who participated in everything. As we went to sleep were all looking forward to our final day of work.

On Saturday, July 10 the Maui Work Team participated in a project with Maui Cultural Land https://mauiculturallands.org/, in the Honokowai Valley. Extensive archeological surveys of Honokowai Valley conducted in 1999 revealed that beneath the tangle of foliage lay numerous archaeological sites, including homes, farms, trails and heiaus (places of worship). These findings showed that within the valley was once a thriving, self-sufficient village of about 600 families, likely dating from more than a century ago. The team probably learned more than the work we did, removing foliage from the valley floor. When we left to valley some in the group went on a hike through the ”Acid War Zone,” to Nakalele Point and the Nakalele Blowhole. Once again, we ended up going to a beach and coming back to the resort for supper and time in the pool.

When Maui Cultural Lands president Ekolu Lindsey first considered the idea of traveling 500 miles in a voyaging canoe, he had some doubts—mainly the worry of becoming seasick! “I had to overcome some fears,” Ekolu said. “But I was excited to try to make a difference, to help find some […]

Thursday, July 15

After prepping and beginning painting on Wednesday, Thursday was a long day of painting the Lahaina United Methodist Church (UMC). Lahaina UMC was started in 1913 at the north end of the island of Maui, its basement is used by many community groups of Lahaina. All the team members left tokens of paint on the shoes and clothing from the day. Once again, when the team was done working on the project for the day, we headed to the beach – this time Napali Beach for snorkeling, swimming, and skim boarding. Then back to Papakea Resort to hit the pool and grill supper.
