Beloved siblings,

I write with a heavy heart and a fierce love for our neighbors. We are witnessing suffering that should never be normalized.

For months, ICE agents have torn people from our communities in the shadows, and today that violence became deadly. An agent shot and killed our neighbor, Renee Good. We name this for what it is: a grave injustice and a violation of the sacredness of human life.

As we enter the season of Epiphany, we proclaim that evil does not rule the world—God does. Epiphany reveals a God who disrupts tyrants and exposes the lies of power. When Herod sought violence, the magi refused his command. Warned in a dream, they went home by another road, choosing holy defiance over compliance with death-dealing systems.

God is present in this moment—not blessing cruelty, but standing with the harmed, the hunted, and the grieving. God is breathing courage into our communities, summoning us to resilience, and calling us to walk the long road toward freedom—freedom from fear, freedom from silence, freedom from complicity.

Hear this clearly: our neighbors can rely on us. Bethel Lutheran Church of Shoreline will not turn away. We will pray, we will show up, we will offer protection and care, and we will stand with our immigrant neighbors without fear.

We rise together—resilient, radiant, and unafraid.

May the God who casts down the mighty, who guards the vulnerable, and who leads us by another road bless us and keep us, now and always.
