The Passage: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." - Jesus in John 16:33.
The Promise: When we face something unfamiliar in life, something troubling or difficult, we like to reach out to someone that has already experienced a similar happening. This is for obvious reasons. We gain valuable insight, direction, and encouragement from those who have walked this difficult road before us. This is what Jesus is saying here. He is not denying that our life will be filled with tribulation. Tribulation in this world is not an if but when, yet, we can be of good cheer. Why? Christ has already experienced the same rejection, hate, suffering, pain, and heartache that we may experience; and has overcome them. This is why His Word can bring us peace and 'good cheer', even in the midst of tribulation. He has been there and overcame. By depending on the Father, He made it and is telling us that we can too, if we but trust the Father.
The Prayer: Father, I know that tribulation is certain in this world but I want to thank you today, for the peace you have offered through your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me look to you day by day for stability and strength, so as to not waver or falter in the midst of tribulation or trial. I need you, and ask that you fill me with your peace. I recognize that this is the only way that I can overcome and truly be of good cheer. Please forgive my lack of trust. In Jesus name. Amen.
