A Prayer for GOOD SHEPHERD SUNDAY from Pastor David Bures:
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Let us pray,
O God, in Christ you taught us the depth of your
love and concern for us in the image of the Good
Shepherd. You would guide and protect us in all
that we do or say, and we are so grateful. Amen.

LECTIONARY SCRIPTURES FOR APRIL 26, 2021
Acts 4:5-12 Peter and John stand before the Council.
Psalm 23 The Shepherd’s Psalm
1 John 3:16-24 God’s love in our hearts leads to care and support for those in need.
John 10:11-18 This is one of the great ‘I am . . .’ statements of Jesus in John’s Gospel. It speaks of the sacrificial action of the good shepherd.

From the SERMON:
"...Read a story told by an elderly man who said that he has had a happy life. But it wasn’t always that way. After years of suffering, he was one of those who survived internment in a German concentration camp. After his release he spent months wandering, along with millions of people in Europe whose lives had been devastated by the N***s. His home had been destroyed, his relatives murdered, his property confiscated, he wandered his native land without hope.
One winter night, miserable and cold with nowhere to go, he decided that he must choose between a life of crime and su***de. Then he saw a man who looked as desperate and miserable as he was, but who apparently had come across a few coins with which he had purchased a small cake from a street vendor. As the man turned to go, he saw this man who told the story standing alone in the cold. He walked over and handed him a piece of the cake.
The man who told this story said that that small act of generosity changed his life. It made him realize that there was still goodness and decency in the world. The light had not gone out of the world. So, from that bit of hope he eventually went on to a happy, successful life. It goes to show that you may never know the effect on someone else of some kind gesture of your own."

About 3 weeks ago, the problem with the thermostat was corrected and we now have heat in the sanctuary for the 10:00 am morning worship. The sanctuary is warm now during church.

The prayer was from Pastor David Bures.
Also from Pastor David, the 2nd verse from the hymn "Almighty Father, Who Dost Give" by John H. B. Mastermind, 1922.
"Lift up our hearts, O King of kings,
To brighter hopes and kindlier things;
To visions of a larger good,
And holier dreams of brotherhood."

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Let us pray,
Gracious Father, whose Spirit joins us in our prayers, enabling us to share our deepest feelings with you: Make us sensitive to the presence of your Spirit as we pray, that we may be honest and sincere in the sharing of our souls with you. Hear us through Christ our Lord. Amen.

FATHER'S DAY PRAYER: We thank you, O God, for those who have been fathers to us. We honor our grandfathers, our uncles and brothers, those who have demonstrated love and care to us in our lives.
We thank you, O God, for those who have been like fathers to us. We appreciate our teachers, leaders and pastors, who have been both male and female, and we especially honor those who have extended fatherly tenderness and love to us. We thank you, O God, for those who have fulfilled a fatherly role in our lives.
Loving God, you have been both mother and father to us. Your love and care are felt in the ways we are loved and cared for by others. We thank you for all the men in our lives who have shared your love with us. WE ask that you guide and nurture new fathers and fathers-to-be. We seek your forgiveness for fathers who have been unable to be a source of strength, who have not responded to their children and have not sustained their families. Grant your wisdom to all fathers to love their children as you have loved your children. We thank you, o God, for fatherhood and motherhood, for the blessing of parents in our lives.
Abba, Father, we pray with those who are mourning the loss of fathers today, and for those whose fathers were absent or abusive. Ease their pain on this day. ay they know your embrace, and that you are the all-loving, all-caring parent. We thank you, O God, that you are always with us, that you will never leave us or forsake us.
We thank you for this day, and ask that you bless all of your children with your love. Amen.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, let us pray,
O God, our Creator, you are like a father to us. You love us no matter what; you are continually concerned for our welfare; you seek to influence and guide us in ways that will result in our betterment; you give us freedom to grow by making mistakes as well as by enjoying successes; you always stand ready to help and listen. Thank you, O God. May we be better, more appreciative, and more loving children. Amen. from Pastor David Bures

Dr. Drew Cottle wrote the following prayer based on the story of Sarah's laughter (in GENESIS 18:1-15). (A prayer for all of us.)
"Dear Creator and Lord: Often, when we are presented with opportunities beyond our own imagination, we laugh and disbelieve. Sarah's laughter then is no difference from our own expectations. Help us, Lord, to see not what we can be, but to see what you would have us do, and help us to trust you, so that your will for us is successful. Amen."
