It's the opposite of hiding God's word in our heart (Psalm 119:11) or fulfilling the law of Christ by caring for others (Galatians 6:2.) It's the ultimate marriage of human focused humanism and hyper-individualism. Self is elevated to the throne of God!

A Non-Anxious Presence
A Non-Anxious Presence
Sometimes your job and your role at work differ. My job at weddings is to officiate. My role is to be a non-anxious presence. Officiating is easy. I work out the details of the ceremony with the couple, we rehearse it beforehand, and I read it during the service. Being a non-anxious presence is much more demanding.
Weddings are one of the most stressful events in the lives of people. Most people only go through one or a few, feel like there is a lot at stake, go in with huge expectations, and have to deal with the views of other people who are also involved in the wedding. Did I mention that weddings tend to be expensive which raises expectations even higher?
When people are in situations full of high anxiety, they seldom do their best. I have officiated weddings where there were fights, screaming matches, people abruptly leaving, and a multitude of angry glares and harshly spoken words. It helps to have at least one person there with the attitude and demeanor of calmness, focus, graciousness, and clear direction. That is what being a non-anxious presence is all about. Perhaps there are places God would have you play that role at work, at home, or in the world?
