“This is what He (the LORD) showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand. And the LORD said to me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A plumb line.’ Amos 7:7-8
Like most of the minor prophets, the Book of Amos is filled with a heavy dose of God’s pending judgement against the sins of His people. Amos was a simple man (Shepherd and farmer) from Judah (Southern Kingdom) who God called to go and prophesy in Israel (Northern Kingdom). You may recall that Israel (Northern Kingdom) went astray from God and deep into idolatry much sooner than Judah did and was taken into captivity by the Assyrians. God warned them repeatedly through Amos and other prophets that judgement would come unless they repented, but they did not listen and continued down the path to their own destruction. Repent or perish is a refrain that needs to be repeated in our day.
In the passage above (Amos 7:7-8), God used a common building tool of that day, a plumb line, to make His point to Amos and Israel. You may have used a plumb line or something similar for aligning your pictures on the wall. The picture God gave Amos was of Him standing beside a wall with a plumb line to see if the wall was in plumb (straight or crooked). Of course, God’s point was that Israel was crooked, out of plumb, not pursuing or measuring up to God’s righteous standards. God had called and covenanted with them to follow and represent Him. They failed. In Amos 8, God
through Amos, listed a litany of charges against the nation that revealed their sins (Amos 8:4-6- abuse of the poor, dishonest scales, misplaced priorities, etc.). Notice that when people aren’t right with God and walking with Him in right relationship, it will inevitably show up in how they treat one another. Israel was not right with God, and it was clearly evident in the way they deceived, mistreated and abused one another for economic gain.
I will acknowledge that reading the Old Testament prophets is generally less appealing to me than reading the Gospels, Acts, or the Epistles in the New Testament, but once you understand the message those Old Testament prophets were bringing to the people, it becomes extremely relevant to us in our day. This morning let’s investigate one of those minor prophets to see what God has to tell us.
