June 3, Exodus 16
In Exodus 16, we read that God provided the people with manna to eat. He fed them daily (except on the Sabbath Day) for forty years. Something deeper is going on here. Many centuries later, Jesus would come as “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32 NIV) and “the bread of life” (John 6:35 NIV). Each day the Lord provided for His people and gave them daily bread to feed their bodies. Likewise, may we daily trust the Lord to satisfy our spiritual hunger and sustain and feed our souls!

June 2, Exodus 15
In today’s reading we see that after God rescued His people from the Egyptians by parting the Red Sea that Moses, Miriam, and the Israelites sang songs of praise to God. Oftentimes, when God answers our prayers and delivers us, we can be quick to forget Him. May we always remember to praise and thank God!

June 1, Exodus 14
In Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV), before the Lord parts the Red Sea, Moses tells the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Will you take these words to heart today? Rather than worrying and attempting to fix the problems in your life, will you stand firm, be still, and watch the Lord fight for you and bring about your deliverance? May the Lord part the “Red Sea” of your life!

May 31, Exodus 13
Exodus 13:17-18 (NIV) says, “When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, ‘If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.’ So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.” When God leads the people out of Egypt, He does not do it as would be expected. He does not take them on the short route, the easy path, or the most-traveled highway. Instead, He takes them by the Red Sea. God was not focused on expediency but on showing His glory and on developing a nation. Expediency was not going to build character in God’s people. God could not part the Red Sea when the people were on the main route. What about you? Could it be that the Lord is more concerned about shaping your heart than quickly getting you to your desired destination in life? Could it be that your way might deny God the opportunity of performing a miracle in your life? May we trust that the Lord best knows the road ahead of us.

May 30, Exodus 12
In today’s reading from Exodus 12, we read about the establishment of Passover. The Lord has all the Israelite families kill a lamb, eat it for a meal, and then apply the blood of the lamb around their doorframes so that he will “pass over” (Exodus 12:23 NIV) their homes and spare their lives. Passover clearly points us to Jesus. Jesus is called our “Passover Lamb” by Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV). John the Baptist in John 1:29 (NIV) said that Jesus was “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” As Christians, we are covered by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus. His blood keeps us from spiritual death. Are you covered by the blood of the Lamb?

May 29, Exodus 11
So far, we have seen how 9 plagues devastated the nation of Egypt. In Exodus 11, we read today that the Lord is going to bring about the worst plague of them all by killing all the firstborn sons of Egypt. Often people think their sin only affects them. That is not true at all. Pharaoh brings the whole nation of Egypt down with him. His hardness of heart wrecks his own life as well as all of Egypt. We need to be aware not only of how our sin hurts us but also the harm it does to our families, friends, churches, co-workers, etc. Whether we accept it or not, our choices impact many others than just ourselves. If we considered this, maybe we would think twice about some of our decisions.

May 28, Exodus 10
What is forgiveness? In Exodus 10:16-17 we read how Pharaoh confesses his sin and asks for forgiveness. After this, Moses prays on Pharaoh’s behalf, and God removes the locusts. When Pharaoh sees this, he once again refuses to allow God’s people to go. We see this pattern in Pharaoh. He is not really sorry for his sin, but he is just sorry about the consequences he is facing because of his sin. This is not true repentance and forgiveness. Repentance requires us to confess our sin, but we must genuinely be sorry for our sin and seek to turn from our sin to be forgiven. This is common today. Many people do not feel bad about their sin. They just feel bad when they get caught in their sin. At the end of the day, we cannot truly be forgiven unless we first truly repent. We cannot expect God to forgive us if we are not actually asking Him to forgive us in the first place.

May 27, Exodus 9
Exodus 9:12 (NIV) is a troubling verse. It tells us that “the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart.” Again and again, we have seen the hardness of Pharaoh’s heart. Because Pharaoh continued to harden his heart against God, ultimately God judged him by giving him what he desired. Arguably, this is the worst judgment we can ever receive. If we insist on our own selfish ways and are adamant on rejecting God, we run the risk that eventually God will remove His hand of blessing from us and leave us to ourselves. People often say that God sends people to hell. That is not accurate. This is really what hell is—choosing an existence without God.
