"Dear Brothers and Sisters at Saint Edward Parish,

Our Sacred Scripture readings this weekend invite us to care for one another, drawing wisdom and strength from God Himself. In doing so, we are called to let the light of Christ in us shine before the world. Pastoral care is not only the work of priests and deacons, but a mission the Lord entrusts to each of us, lived out
according to our gifts and circumstances.

This care often takes simple, meaningful forms: listening with compassion to someone carrying a heavy burden, offering to run an errand or bring a meal to someone who is ill, accompanying a person through grief or discernment, or welcoming those who hunger and thirst for fellowship into our homes and parish life.

Here at St. Edward Parish, we are in the process of aligning and organizing our ministries and leadership so that we can intentionally launch a season of pastoral care from July 1, 2026 through July 2027. As part of this effort, we are also called to be mindful of those who have been displaced from home and hearth. Our parish reflects the reality of those who have and those who have not. May we always strive to look upon one another through the lens of active mercy and prayerful compassion.

One way to enter more fully into this flow of mercy and prayer is to open our hearts to Christ’s love and light through the Alpha program. Alpha will be offered every Monday evening for 11 weeks beginning after Easter. Registration begins this weekend, and we are also seeking volunteers to serve on our prayer team, hospitality (meal) team, administration, and as table hosts and coordinators.

I would also like to thank all who have helped refurbish and renovate our newly purchased parish rectory. In approximately three weeks, the rectory will be ready for move-in. If you or someone you know has furnishings to donate, please contact the parish office.

Finally, we are launching a phone call ministry to reach out to our homebound parishioners, identify those who may wish to receive the Eucharist, offer prayerful companionship, and invite them to share in a ministry of prayer for our parish needs.

May the Eucharist we receive, embody, and share draw us ever more deeply into communion with Christ and with one another.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John-Patrick"

"Dear Brothers and Sisters of Saint Edward,

This coming weekend’s Scriptures offer a clear and hopeful vision of how God forms us as His people.

The prophet Zephaniah speaks of a people who are humble and lowly, who seek refuge in the name of the Lord. Psalm 146 proclaims a God who listens to the cries of the vulnerable and remains faithful to His people. Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that God often chooses what the world overlooks to reveal His wisdom. And in the Gospel, Jesus proclaims the Beatitudes, blessing the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, and the peacemakers.

Together, these readings point us toward the heart of our parish vision: to unite parish leaders and parishioners alike in God’s oneness of pastoral care.

Pastoral care begins with a simple but essential desire to want to know one another. It grows through listening, through attentiveness to the joys, struggles, and faith needs of those we encounter from all walks of life. It is not about having all the answers, but about accompanying one another
in faith, trusting that God is at work in our shared life. Whether listening deeply to those in need by sharing in their sorrows, or receiving the gift of joy from a passerby, this is where pastoral care begins.

In the coming months, we are seeking parishioners who feel called to extend pastoral care to one another and to our wider community through Alpha! Alpha is an experience of coming to know Jesus more clearly, more nearly, and more dearly. Registration for Alpha participants will begin on
Saturday, February 7, following the 5:00 p.m. Mass.

On Monday, February 9, we will host an information session for all prospective Alpha volunteers. Many volunteers are needed so that the Body of Christ may be made present through this work of accompaniment and welcome.

Also on Monday, February 9, we will begin partnering in pastoral care by equipping phone call ministers for outreach to parishioners and friends who have visited or registered with Saint Michael in the past. Please consider signing up to serve as a phone call minister of pastoral care, this simple act of connection can be a profound sign of God’s care and
presence.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John-Patrick"

"Dear Brothers and Sisters of Saint Edward,

This weekend we are reminded that God brings light into darkness and calls His people to unity and mission. Isaiah proclaims that a people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Saint Paul urges us to be united in Christ, and in the Gospel, Jesus calls His first disciples to leave what is familiar and follow Him together.

These themes were beautifully evident during our recent Healing Mass and prayer service on Friday, January 9. Through the Eucharist, intercessory prayer, and confessions, many entrusted their needs to the Lord and it was moving to witness the unity of our diverse parish communities praying side by side. Special thanks to Fr. Chad Hill, Max Muñoz, Fr. Anthony Ramos, Fr. Ignatius Mudiyappan, and Fr. Paul Brunet as well as everyone who planned and participated in this well attended moment of engagement with Jesus and one another.

Please note a few upcoming dates that relate to our parish life, including: January 30-31, when I will be at a pastoral care conference featuring immigration and healthcare challenges. On Monday, February 2, we will celebrate Jesus, who is the 'Light of the World' in a bilingual Candlemas Mass at 6:30 p.m. Finally our Crab Feed takes place Saturday, February 7, alongside the opening of Alpha registration.

Please let me know if you have any questions on these opportunities for worship and fellowship alike and, in the meantime, may Christ's light guide us as we follow Him together!

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John-Patrick"

"Dear Friends of Saint Edward Parish,

Today's readings invite us to notice how often God works in quite and unassuming ways. In Isaiah, the Lord speaks of a servant chosen to be a light. Light does not demand attention; it simply shines, allowing others to see more clearly and find their way.

In the Gospel, John the Baptist offers a model of humility and faith. Rather than placing himself at the center, he points to Jesus and says, "Behold, the Lamb of God." Jesus comes not with force or spectacle, but with mercy. His presence reassures, heals, and draws people close.

As disciples of Christ, we are called to reflect that same gentle presence in our own time and place. We know that some families in our community are living with fear and uncertainty right now. As a parish, we hold them in prayer and seek to respond with compassion, discretion, and respect for every person's dignity.

That care is taking concrete form in several hopeful ways. In the coming months, we will begin a phone call ministry to reach out to all of our parishioners, simply to say that you are remembered, that you matter, and to ask if there is any prayer we can offer. Through those conversations, we will also identify those who are homebound and in need of Eucharistic visitation, so that no one is without the comfort of Christ's presence.

Even the renovation of the rectory, with a projected move-in date of March 1, is part of this ongoing renewal, creating space for hospitality, service, and pastoral care.

May we, like John the Baptist, quietly and faithfully point to Christ, the Lamb of God, whose light continues to guide us.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John-Patrick"

"Dear Friends of Saint Edward Parish,

After the joy of Epiphany, when we celebrate that God's promise of salvation is for all people and nations, we now celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. This feast closes the Christmas season and opens Ordinary Time of our liturgical calendar. It is now time to take out the Christmas decorations from our sanctuary, but not without a big thank you to all who helped make our worship space so beautiful!

In this weekend's readings, God reveals Jesus as the Spirit-filled Servant and beloved Son. At His Baptism, Jesus begins a mission of healing, mercy, and justice. When the Father calls Him "beloved," we are reminded that, through Baptism, that same beloved identity is shared with us. Everyone who trusts in Christ is already claimed known and loved by God.

As part of our tradition for this new year, every first Sunday of the month, we will be offering Coffee, Convivio, and Catechesis in the parish hall after the 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. Mass times. On January 4th I offered a teaching about the form, matter, minister, recipients, and graces of each of the Seven Sacraments. In response, I want to clarify a few questions that came from these sessions. The first related to whether lay people can offer an apostolic blessing when someone is on their deathbed and no priest is available. The Apostolic Pardon is a special blessing only given by a priest (or bishop) at the point of death that grants a plenary indulgence, removing all temporal punishments for sins for someone who is properly disposed. It is intended to strengthen the dying person's soul and unite them fully with God's mercy. We also talked about the consecration of an altar and learned in the process that we are blessed to have relics of Saints Felicissima and Adeodatus, Saints Amanda's Proba and Castus, martyrs, St. John de Brebeuf, a French Jesuit who was martyred by the Iroquois by being baptized with boiling water. St. John Vianney, the patron of parish priests, and St. Therese of Lisieux in addition to several other unidentified relics sealed in the altar stones at Saint Edward Parish.

Lastly, let us recall that although many of us are blessed with abundance of graces not everyone is. For this reason, let us remain on the lookout for opportunities to share our blessings with those in need.

Wishing you a truly blessed week!

Sincerely,
Fr. John-Patrick"

Alpha is coming to our parish—and we need your help to make it a success!

Alpha is a welcoming series of conversations that explores life, faith, and meaning. It creates space for people to ask questions, share openly, and encounter the love of Christ, regardless of where they’re starting from.

We’re looking for parishioners to serve as small group coordinators, table helpers, registration assistants, and members of a prayer team who will spend time in Eucharistic Adoration praying for participants. No matter your gifts, there’s a place for you to serve.

Join us for an information breakfast on Saturday, January 10 at 9:00 a.m. in the parish hall to learn more.

"Dear Friends,

In every generation, God reveals His light through faithful people who step forward to serve. Here at Saint Edward, that light has shone brightly through the many parishioners who have supported our life together in leadership and service.

This was especially evident during Advent and Christmas, as we celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Posadas, Simbang Gabi, and the beauty of our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day liturgies. I am deeply grateful to Fr. Chad, Fr. Mamba, Deacon John Bergford, and Deacon Rob Rensel, as well as to all our liturgical ministers and volunteers, the Altar Society and families who decorated the church, our Spanish-speaking prayer groups, the Men's Club, and those who hosted coffee hours and breakfasts. In so many ways, you modeled the spirit of the Epiphany by offering your time, talent, and treasure to honor Christ.

In a special way, I want to acknowledge our 'silent' volunteers who serve faithfully behind the scenes. God sees your generosity, and our parish is truly blessed by your gift of self.

Please note that Fr. Mamba will be in the Congo during January and February teaching, while we work on refurbishing the rectory we recently purchased. During that time, I invite you to extend a warm Saint Edward welcome to Fr. Ignatius, who will be assisting both Saint Edward and Saint Michael parishes.

As we continue in the afterglow of Epiphany, may we be bearers of Christ's light to those in need. Please invite family and friends to our first Healing Mass of the new year on Friday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m.

Finally, all are welcome to an Alpha Volunteer Information Session with breakfast on Saturday, January 10, at 9:00 a.m.

May the Lord deepen our healing, hope, and communion throughout the year ahead.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John-Patrick"
