“To be clear, the Church's objection to this statute is not an attempt to impose Catholic teaching on non-Catholics; it is an effort to stop the State from compelling Catholic health care providers to violate their conscience.”

The Catholic objectors will be shielded from the law while a federal lawsuit plays out against the state policy.

The Knights of Columbus "Family of the Month" program promotes and supports the development of strong and vibrant families that outwardly exhibit ties of love and faith, exemplifying Catholic family values and making meaningful contributions to their parish and larger community.

Alex and Claudia Weiler married in 1993 and subsequently joined St. Joseph Parish Shelton. Shortly after, Alex joined Bernardo Council #1350 and has been a faithful member since that time, serving as Grand Knight for two years. Alex has participated in a wide range of council activities, including the Tootsie Roll Campaign, Free Throw Championship, most recently, Bernardo Council's highly successful First Annual Car & Truck Show held Aug. 16.

Alex has also been a member of Bishop Nilan Assembly of 4th Degree for 25 years, during which time he has served on the Honor Guard for wakes, funerals and ceremonial events.

He served as Eucharistic Minister for many years and he and Claudia have counted the offertory collections after Sunday Masses.

Claudia has been a strong supporter of Alex's efforts for Bernardo Council, having participated in making Easter baskets for St. Vincent DePaul, volunteering for the Free Throw Championship and regularly helping to lead the council's monthly Rosary service at Benchmark at Split Rock.

She sings with the St. Joseph Choir, helps at the Lenten Fish Fry, has served on the parish Finance Committee and worked for Sister Ethel's Craft Group. Claudia also volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul of the Valley.

Bernardo Council #1350 and the entire St. Joseph’s community honor Alex and Claudia Weiler Family on their accomplishments and the strong example they set for all families in our community.

“In the morning, I kneel down outside the door because I know the Lord is in there, and at the end of the day,” said Jarvis, a parishioner of St. Michael in Annandale. “The chapel is always open.”

At the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, there are 184 stainless-steel benches, one for each person who lost their life there.

On campuses of various sizes, all across the United States, Catholicism is on the rise.

Throughout my past two years as a Yale undergrad, I have witnessed a growing presence of Catholic faith and philosophy on my Ivy League campus. This past Easter vigil, the St. Thomas More Catholic Chapel & Center saw nearly 40 members of the Yale community enter the Church. In October, Choose Life at Yale saw more than 200 participants attend our annual pro-life conference, “Vita et Veritas,” including a full lecture hall for a Yale Political Union debate featuring pro-life activist Lila Rose. Our chapter of the Thomistic Institute regularly sees lectures and seminars reach capacity and require waiting lists for students eager to engage with Catholic philosophy.

As we approach Labor Day weekend, we can reflect on the words of Pope Leo XIII to truly embrace the holiday. Take this time off as a well-deserved break, just like Christ intended.

“There is a glimmer, there is a connection there that — well, it’s there all the time, whether we’re aware of it or not.” - Andrew Garfield

It has been 10 years since critically acclaimed actor Andrew Garfield portrayed a Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster movie Silence. It was during the intense research and study of St. Ignatius’ spirituality that the actor talked about “falling in love with Jesus.”

Now, nearly a decade later, as Garfield’s new movie, The Uprising, hits theaters September 10, the actor told the Register that “profound encounter” still exists for him.
