Second Sunday after the Epiphany

Today's readings: Old Testament Isaiah 49:1-7, Epistle 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, Holy Gospel John 1:29-42.

John 1:29 - "The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!' " The Israelites, of old offered a lamb to God at Passover so that death might pass over them and do no harm. Over those long centuries of sacrifice, did they understand that this was actually God's gift? That God would be the true Giver of the true Lamb? Truly, we can never out-give God, for all that we have is His.

About the bulletin cover: The popular painting on the cover by Francisco de Zurbaran is named Agnus Dei - "The Lamb of God." The light of Epiphany, illumined by the words of John the Baptist, declares Jesus to be the perfect lamb without blemish. Just as we sing in the liturgy of the same name, our Agnus Dei takes away our sins in God's merciful Meal.

Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into his courts!

The Baptism of Our Lord

Today's readings: Old Testament- Isiah 42:1-9, Epistle- Roman's 6:1-11, and Holy Gospel- Matthew 3:13-17.

Matthew 3:15- "But Jesus answered him, 'Let it be so now, for thus it is for us to fulfill all righteousness.'" The reason God sent His Son into the world to fulfill all righteousness for us, to do what we could not do. Here, Jesus plunges Himself into our sins and soaks them up in His Baptism, so that in our Baptism we might be cleansed and renewed. The whole of Jesus' life, everything He did and said, was one great offering to the Father in our stead to fulfill all righteousness.
lcmsstewartship.org .......................................................................

It seems natural that John would have attempted to prevent Jesus from being baptized. What need does the spotless, sinless Lamb of God have in Baptism for the repentance of sins? However, Jesus insists upon submerging Himself with sinners in this Baptism to fulfill all righteousness. The righteousness of God is found in His mercy for poor sinners as He emerged from the watery grave into new life and took those sons all the way to the cross.

Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.

Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into his courts.

Circumcision and Name of Jesus

Readings for today: Old Testament- Numbers 6:22-27, Epistle - Galations 3:23-29 and Holy Gospel - Luke 2:21.

Luke 2:21 - "And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb." There it is: the shortest Gospel lesson of the whole Church Year. It is for the festival of the Circumcision and the Name of Jesus. What more do you need to know than the name of Jesus - "the Lord saves." That's who Jesus is: the Lord who saves us sinners. That simple Gospel message is the foundation of our faith and the strength to live out our faith.
lcmsstewartship.org .........................................................................

From one year to the next and "from the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised!" (Paslm 113:3). There is so much wrapped up in the name Jesus ("the Lord saves"). Where the Lord's name is, there He is present to save. Praise be to the Lord, who, through His cross, eternally saves - placing the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit upon us in Holy Baptism.

Lord God, You made Your beloved Son, our Savior, subject to the Law and caused Him to shed His blood on our behalf. Grant us the true circumcision of the Spirit that our hearts may be made pure from all sins; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

This is the covenant that I make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they shall be my people. I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.

Christmas Day

John 1:5 - "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." Through all of our hardships, all of our sorrows, all of our pains and loneliness, Jesus' light shines in the darkness, and we are not overcome. In the face of our sins, in the midst of our pettiness, against all our pride, Jesus' light shines and illustrates our hearts and changes us, day by day, into a greater reflection of His likeness.
lcmsstewartship.org ...........................................................................

The mystery of incarnation, God's power and might have come to us in the form of a vulnerable infant! His holy arm has worked unexpectedly and magnificently by taking on our human flesh in order to save us. For when Christ grew to adulthood, He bared His holy arm in the power of the cross - outstretched for all to see His merciful and unending love.

Almighty God, grant that the birth of Your only-begotten Son in the flesh may set us free from the bo***ge of sin; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.

To us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things!

Christmas Eve
Matthew 1:21 - "She will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." What our good works could never do, Jeus has done: He saved us from our sins, paid our debts, set us free. How can we not give thanks to Him with lives of generosity and godliness? What God's Law could not do - truly motivate us to truly good works - Jesus' love has done!

Fourth Sunday in Advent
December 18, 2022

Our readings for today are: Old Testament - Isiah 7:10-17, Epistle - Romans 1:1-7, and the Gospel - Matthew 1:18-25.

Matthew 1:21 - "She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." What our good works could never do, Jesus has done: He has saved us from our sins, paid our debt, set us free. How can we not give thanks to Him with lives of generosity and godliness? What God's Law could not do - truly motivate us to truly good works - Jesus' love has done.

The sign of a virgin conceiving and giving birth was given despite King Ahaz's refusal to ask. However, for all who believe, Immanuel - "God with us" - is the gift of salvation! God has come to be with us, not to condemn, but to save through His cross (John 3:17). As Mary treasured up the things concerning her Son in her heart, may we treasure Christ in our lives as well (Luke 2:19 &51).

Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come and help us by Your might, that the sins which weigh us down may be quickly lifted by Your grace and mercy; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Third Sunday in Advent
December 11, 2022

Our readings for today are: Old Testament Isiah 35:1-10, Epistle James 5:7-11, Gospel Matthew 11:2-15.

Isiah 35:4 - " Say to those who have an anxious heart, 'Be srong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.' " The return of our Lord at the Last Day is a cause of joy and anticipation for us believers. We know our Lord and His love, and we look forward to His Second Advent. Indeed, how we live our lives here and now flows from our certain hope of resurrection and eternal life.
lcmsstewartship.org ........................................................................

Isiah presents a beautiful picture of the day when the Lord will make this world right. It is a sight to behold! In His ministry, Jeusus literally opened blind eyes to see. At the same time, He was also opening the eyes of faith to see Him as the Messiah. Jesus is still restoring eyes to see alright through His Word. Even though today we see dimly, a day is coming when we shall see face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12).

Lord Jesus Christ, we implore You to hear our prayers and to lighten the darkness of our hearts by Your gracious visitation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit , one God, now and forever.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.

Late post for Sunday Dec. 4, 2022
Second Sunday in Advent

Our readings for today came from: Old Testament Isiah 11:1-10, Epistle Roman's 15:4-13 and the Holy Gosel Matthew 3:1-12.

Matthew 13:1-2 - "In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ' " John prepared the way for Jeusus by preaching repentance. Then, when Jesus' ministry was complete and He was raised from the dead, He sent out His disciples to preach "repentance for the forgiveness of sins " (Luke 24:47). We never outgrow the need for repentance- for examining our lives, turning away from our sins, and turning toward Jesus in faith to recieve his forgiveness and strength for a renewed life of godliness.
lcmsstewardship ........................................................................

Isiah 11:1-10 - Earlier in Isiah, God's people were compared to a great tree that had been felled, leaving only the stump. However, just as large roots draw their sustenance and nutrients from the earth, this stump of Jesse was rooted in the promises of God's Word. Christ is that promise that grew forth from these roots in order to bear the fruit of salvation, making the cross into a life-giving tree.

Stir up in our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of Your only-begotten Son, that by His coming we may be enabled to serve You with pure minds; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God now and forever.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.

Sunday Nov. 27, 2022

First Sunday in Advent

Our readings for today for the Old Testament -Isaiah 2:1-5, The Epistle - Romans 13:11-14, and the Holy Gospel- Matthew 21:1-11.

Matthew 21:3 - "If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once." Just a donkey and her foal. How significant could they be? Could they really be used by the Lord for some great, heavenly purpose? This is one facet of stewardship we often forget. The blessing it is to us to be of service in the Lord's Kingdom. What an honor the Lord bestows upon us by using our gifts for His goals!
lcmsstewartship.org .........................................................................

BEHOLD (Christ Incarnate was able to be seen with human eyes and will be seen again, God in the flesh!), YOUR KING (Jesus is king of kings, who reigns over all, and at the same time is our king!) IS COMING (Jesus came on that first Christmas, He came into His Holy City to die and rise, and He will come again!) TO YOU (He has done it all for you for your forgiveness and eternal life!).

Stir up Your power, O Lord and come, that by Your protection we may be rescued from the threatening perils of our sins and saved by Your mighty deliverance; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you.
