SPIRITUAL MEDICS

We are living in the heart of transformation. Things are changing around us and within us at a rapid rate. We are in times of conflict and loss, of pain and struggle. Anger and blame are endemic.

Wherever you find yourself, I want to offer you something positive you can do. Something we can all do together.

I have committed myself to be a spiritual medic in these days of chaos. I hope you will join me and become one too.

If you do, here is what you will commit to for the duration of the turmoil:

To sustain the healing of creation.
To connect with others with intentionality.
To pray protection each day at noon.
To help diminish suffering.

What these four commitments mean will be up to you, and every other medic, to decide. In the days to come I will post some reflections on each one as four guiding principles, but I leave the comments section off because we are not an organization. There is no hierarchy. All are welcome and all needed. Our purpose will soon be clear.

Please share this invitation with others you know who are living in this vision already.

I am a senior citizen in the Choctaw Nation, but I speak only for myself. I want to offer everyone something tangible, something important, they can do to bend change toward hope.

A letter from our Bishop Shannon

Dear Beloveds, In these last three weeks, I have struggled with what to say or write. Part of this struggle has been trying to keep my thoughts succinct, but I believe you deserve to read them in full. I sat down to write something many times since the murder of Renee Nicole Good. I’ve started...

“When the church gets together, there’re always big questions in the room. Questions like, What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus right now? Questions like, What does the gospel offer that secular humanism doesn’t? And my favorite question, bishop, exactly what are we fighting for anyway? Those are hard questions but fair questions. And, each question, to my mind, is longing to understand what success looks like for followers of Jesus? Jesus never promises conventional notions of success. He doesn’t promise, wealth, promotions or prominence. What he promises is a life of meaning. What he promises is that if you have a harvest heart there’s plenty of good work to do. What he promises is to place you in the largest idea of family you can imagine. What he promises is that we can rely on him as we join him in his adventure. What he offers is a journey toward a new depth of integrity. Success for us, in every season and in all situations, is staying connected to Jesus’ why! To Jesus’ purpose! So the definition of success for those sent by Jesus is measured in reliance. Reliance on his ways and on his words.”

Lifting prayers for an end to hatred and fear. Please pray for these young people, their families, and for an end to violence that begets violence.

As shepherd of this beloved parish, it is with a very heavy heart that I share with you the news of the death of two of our newer members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim. They were gunned down Wednesday evening outside the Capital Jewish Museum here in Washington, in what appears to be a targeted attack. They were attending a conference of the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Both were members of the Israeli embassy staff. Yaron was a researcher in the political department, while Sarah organized U.S. missions to Israel. Drawn to Christ, their spiritual journeys of faith led them to our parish, where they had been faithfully participating for several months, beautiful lights in our midst. In their hunger to know and to belong, they even attended our Newcomers Series. They were soon to be engaged. In fact, Sarah, originally from Kansas, was to accompany Yaron this Sunday to Israel to meet his family for the first time.

Together we pray for them. And we lift in prayer all their loved ones.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servants Yaron and Sarah. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, sheep of your own fold, lambs of your own flock, sinners of your own redeeming. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

With you in Christ,

Dominique+
