Hope Dies in Bottomless Fries

We have a birthday tradition in our house, or maybe it's less of a tradition and more of an inalienable right. The birthday person gets to choose where we eat, and there are absolutely no vetoes allowed.

Several years ago, on the Fourth of July, it was my birthday, and I knew exactly where I wanted to go: my favorite restaurant in the world, Genghis Grill. We spent the morning lounging around the house, got ready, and made the hour-long drive to Hendersonville where this glorious establishment was located. I was excited.

As we pulled into the parking lot, we noticed there weren't many cars. We parked, got out, walked up to the door, and found it locked. A small sign simply read, "Closed for the 4th of July."

My immediate thought was, "Who closes on the Fourth of July?" I was heartbroken. Our backup plan, one that was nowhere on my birthday list, was Red Robin. YUMMM! But at least they have bottomless fries.

That door was closed, but as they say, God opened a window. For me, though, it felt less like a window and more like a dirty garage door. Yet here's the funny thing: I can't remember where we ate on my birthday last year, or the year before that, or really any birthday since that disappointing day in an empty parking lot. But I will never forget eating at Red Robin. It became a core memory, at least for me, of time spent with my family, and for that I am forever grateful.

One of the first things I remember Bro. Ron sharing with me when we were considering a move to Shelbyville was this prayer: "Lord, open doors no man can shut and shut doors no man can open."

We let a lot of the wrong things lead us in life, sometimes even our birthday appetites, but the only thing that always leads us rightly is the Spirit of God.

Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:7, "For we walk by faith, not by sight." We do not walk according to our hungers, wants, desires, emotions, or preferences. We walk in step with the Spirit of God, and when He leads, we can trust that His path will never end in disappointment.

Friday Thoughts from a Pastor's Heart:

We often say that prayer changes things. And it does. But the thing prayer changes most is us.

Maybe that's why we sometimes hesitate to commit ourselves to deep, devoted prayer, whether alone or together. We are usually happy for God to change the people and circumstances around us, but too often we resist the changes He wants to make within us.

So make this your prayer today:

"Lord, pour Your Spirit into me and make me more like You. Make me into the person you want me to be."

Then watch what happens. The people and circumstances around you will change, because you are changed.

In the Forge of Heaven!

Have you ever been flipping channels and found yourself mesmerized by a show you probably never would have watched except that you landed on it at just the right time? That’s what happened when I discovered the History Channel series, Forged in Fire, where four contestants, each a blacksmith at some level, are challenged to recreate a particular blade or sword from history.

The challenges vary. Sometimes they are given a block of iron. Sometimes steel. Other times they must forge a blade from scrap metal like an old mower. In the end, they all must create a weapon that meets the same expectations. The blades are tested for strength, durability, and cutting ability. Like any competition, the best sword wins.

None of it is possible without fire. These blacksmiths can take a bike chain and turn it into a beautiful sword, but it all begins in the fire. Fire melts the metal, purifies the elements, makes the iron pliable, and strengthens the steel.

This upcoming Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. It is the day we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit. It is the day the followers of Jesus were filled with power. It is the day the Church was born. And it all happened because of fire!

Not the fire of an earthly forge, but a heavenly one. The fire of the Holy Spirit melts us, purifies us, makes us pliable, shapes us into what He wants us to be, and strengthens us. However, just as a block of metal must spend time in the flame, we also must daily choose to place our lives in the forge of Heaven.

Acts 2:1 tells us that “when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.” They waited in hopeful expectation, placing their lives fully in Him as the Spirit fell upon and filled them. Today and every day, choose to live in the forge of Heaven. Let the Holy Spirit fill you, consume you, and shape you! And when he does, he will use you to light up the world.

Prayer: Holy Spirit fill me, search me and consume what doesn’t belong, melt me and mold me into what you want me to be, fill me and make me a light!
