Day 6 of reading Matthew 22-28 together: Chapter 27. Jesus is wrongfully condemned by his own people and crucified. At his death, the wall and barrier between us and God was torn down. Sin was paid for by Christ's death.

Something interesting happened in the midst of this. Part of an atoning sacrifice for the Jews was the laying on of hands and the "passing" of sins of the sinner to the offering. This would happen on a grander scale for the Day of Atonement. Notice in Chapter 27 what happens: the laying of hands upon Jesus.

The leaders of the Jews literally slapped and beat Jesus after condemning him. The Romans, who were gentiles, beat Jesus, scourged him, and crucified him. Jews and Gentiles are both represented here. In sinful acts upon an innocent savior, they laid their sins upon him. Jesus, God's righteous and blameless son, took those sins upon himself and paid for them, washing all who would confess Jesus as Lord clean, both Jew and Gentile. Jesus die for the Pharisee and for the Roman. He died for us all.
