UPDATE!
The Bedford County Courthouse was destroyed by tornado in 1830 and again by fire in 1934. No legal documents for this very old cemetery survived. The first burial took place in 1839. Andy Bobo, Attorney at Law, has prepared and filed a Charter of Incorporation with the Secretary of State. Andy has also drawn Articles and ByLaws for the Trust Fund for Perpetual Upkeep and will prepare the Deed for the purchase of the lot mentioned above. This purchase is being made entirely with donations from the New Hermon Church of Christ, the Cemetery and private donations made by various descendants of those buried in the cemetery. When cleaned up and, hopefully, some nice trees planted, it will greatly enhance the cemetery and the community as a whole. We hope to have the purchase closed within the next month. Donations are still welcomed to make this happen AND to build our trust fund. Donations made each May currently cover the costs of mowing and weedeating during that summer but donors pass away every year. IT’S UP TO THOSE OF US NOW LIVING TO SECURE THIS TRUST FUND. IT WON’T HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE! Mail contributions payable to New Hermon Cemetery, c/o Linda Allen Coop, 727 Possum Trot Road, Shelbyville, Tennessee 37160.
