If the Babies Ain't Cryin', the Church Is Dyin' 🙌🔥
Every Sunday, churches across America face a choice.
Do we expect children to act like miniature adults, sitting perfectly still and silent for an hour? Or do we welcome them as they are—wiggles, whispers, questions, giggles, tears, and all?
We believe children are not just the future of the church. They are part of the church right now.
Let's be honest: children make noise. Babies cry. Toddlers wiggle. Little ones ask questions at the most unexpected moments. Sometimes a dropped toy sounds louder than the sermon itself.
And that's okay.
Some of my favorite sounds during a church service aren't found in the music or the message. They're the sounds of little voices singing off-key, pages turning in children's Bibles, and yes, even the occasional crying baby.
Because those sounds mean families are here.
They mean parents are bringing their children to learn about Jesus.
They mean another generation is being raised in the faith.
The phrase "If the babies ain't cryin', the church is dyin'" may sound humorous, but there's truth behind it. A church without children is a church without growth. A church without young families has no one to carry the torch into the next generation.
Of course, that doesn't mean children shouldn't be taught respect and reverence. As they grow, they should learn how to participate in worship, listen to God's Word, and serve alongside the church family. But our expectations should be age-appropriate.
A two-year-old isn't going to sit quietly through a forty-minute sermon.
A three-year-old may need reminders.
A 7 year old with ADHD may need to wiggle. It's ok!
A baby may cry.
And none of those things are signs of bad parenting.
They're signs of childhood.
Parents, if your little one gets restless during service, please know this: we see you. We know you're trying. We know bringing children to church can feel exhausting some Sundays. But don't stay home because you're worried your child might make noise.
Bring them anyway.
The church needs your family.
And church family, let's extend grace. Instead of becoming frustrated by the sounds of children, let's thank God for them. Every giggle, every question, every little voice is evidence that God is still bringing families through our doors.
The goal isn't a perfectly quiet sanctuary.
The goal is a church filled with people of every age learning to follow Jesus together.
So if you hear a baby cry this Sunday, don't be annoyed.
Smile.
It's the sound of a church that's alive!🌿
