Changing HerStory at St. Thomas

Changing HerStory at St. Thomas Inspired by faith, we stand against the unfathomable challenges women in poverty face and celebrate the hope we can give to our sisters across the globe.

Motivated by our Christian faith to be compassionate and do justice, the women from St. Thomas Community Presbyterian Church formed Changing HERStory. Our Vision is:

 To invite and welcome other women, regardless of their faith or beliefs, whose goals align with our mission to learn about women’s issues in extreme poverty and then to empower the women living in extreme poverty to transform their

lives through entrepreneurial activities;

 To honor the dignity of each woman by empowering her through sustainable personal economic development;

 To prayerfully pool our resources to invest globally in women living in extreme poverty, regardless of their faith or beliefs; and

 To seek to understand and educate ourselves and others.

Another successful event is in the books!
CHS celebrated its 10th anniversary this past Monday by welcoming two guest speakers.

First, members of CHS updated guests on many of the past speakers we've welcomed over the years. Then, Laura Dell came to us virtually from Guatemala. She spoke about her work with Sueños, Serniña and ConnectED, and how these organizations strive to create positive change for young girls thru education.

Our second speaker, RaeAnn White, Elder of Outreach at St. Thomas, spoke about becoming a sponsor church to a refugee family thru Samaritas and how individuals can help.

The evening wrapped up with much excitement when microloans were granted to three women from the Philippines. These small loans, funded with membership dues combined with guest donations, enable female entrepreneurs to improve their businesses and care for their families.
CONGRATULATIONS to Monday's microloan recipients- Cecile Quintal $725, Marivic Paunil $675, and Merla Marqueses $325.

CHS is greatful for the continued support of its members and friends, for without you, none of this would be possible!

ONE WEEK FROM TONIGHT!

Laura Dell, a dedicated nonprofit professional, blends her passion for education and public health to create meaningful change. Armed with a Bachelor's degree in Public Health from Tulane University and a Master's in Education from Johns Hopkins University, Laura's journey began with Teach for America in Oahu, Hawaii. There, she spent three transformative years teaching 7th-grade Special Education math and co-leading a girls' empowerment after-school program.

Laura's dedication to education extended globally, supporting a girls' empowerment organization in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, before managing a teen dating violence prevention program in the U.S. Driven by her background in public health and international development, Laura felt drawn to Guatemala post-pandemic.

For the past two years, Laura has immersed herself in Guatemala, initially working for Sueños and SerNiña before finding her stride as Development and Communications Manager at ConnectED. Her focus remains on leveraging education as a catalyst for positive change, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping futures and providing opportunities, particularly for girls. Laura is grateful for the chance to learn from Guatemala's diverse experiences and contribute to its educational landscape.
