The Department of Defense has just reduced its number of recognized religious faiths and belief systems from 211 to 31. Lutherans and Episcopalians remain on the list. For now. But Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemöller taught us all something very important about being the ones who remain on a list like this. He taught us that eventually... you don't.

A Pastoral Letter

A number of people from our congregation live in Connecticut’s 50th District. Recently a candidate running for State Representative for that district posted a hate filled screed against the LGBTQIA+ community.

I want to publicly stand with our congregation members from Connecticut, their friends and family, and the entire LGBTQIA+ community and say emphatically that hate is neither a God-given right nor the natural order of things as this person implies. LGBTQIA+ people, like all of humanity, have been created in the image of God and bear the face of God. To demonize the face of an LGBTQIA+ person is to demonize the face of the Divine. To demonize the face of the Divine is, in a word, blasphemy.

I am thankful that this hate has triggered a bi-partisan backlash with calls from across party lines for this person to end his campaign. We must recognize, however, that this hatred did not appear spontaneously. It was carefully raised and nurtured by a system that has chosen to demonize the “other” as a method to divide communities and convince people to vote out of hate and fear rather than out of their own, and their community’s best interest. While I am thankful that people from this candidate’s own party have denounced him, I call on those same people to renounce and abandon the path of culture war politics and adopt instead a path that seeks better ways for us all to love our neighbors.

For our part as Christ Trinity Church, we will continue to advocate for our LGBTQIA+ siblings from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and beyond. We will hang our Pride flag on our church, laugh and tell stories with each other sitting in our Rainbow chairs, cook food for Sheffield Pride and continue to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God. We will, as always, welcome all people into our church to laugh with us, cry with us, and dream up new and creative ways to better love our neighbors. In the end we know that it is love that will show itself to be stronger than hate and it will be love that changes the world for good.

Some of us will be hanging out in these today from 4pm - 7pm. We won't be moving the needle, driving efficiency, scaling or optimizing anything. We won't be closing the loop on any actionable items, we won't do any deep work, or wrap up mission-critical items before a hard stop. We're going to laugh, tell stories and touch grass. Wanna come out and play? Come on! It's not exclusive. Everyone is welcome. Bring a beverage and a dad joke (or equivalent) and we'll see you there!
