Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Elizabeth Horton.

Elizabeth “Betty” L. Horton, age 90, of Sheffield, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by family.

Elizabeth Louella was born February 1, 1935, in Kewanee, the daughter of Floyd and Sophia (VerStraete) Mahnesmith. She married Max A. Horton, Sr. on June 6, 1953, he preceded her in death.

Elizabeth was a Cosmetologist for more than 40 years and a Tax Consultant for seniors for 10 years. She enjoyed doing yard work, tending to her vegetable garden, canning, painting, knitting, crocheting, and loved spending time with her family. Elizabeth was an avid golfer, enjoyed dancing, a good game of bridge and traveling. She was an involved officer on the Red Covered Bridge Hair Association for many years, was a volunteer for the US Census Bureau and The American Heart Association.

Elizabeth is survived by five of her children: Max A. (Pamela) Horton, Jr. of Hope Mills, NC; Nathan R. “Rob” Horton of East Moline, IL; Jeynelle E. Johnston of Clinton, IL; Heidi M. (Rick) Estes of Lane, IL; and Matthew A. “PJ” (Patricia) Horton, of Germany; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren with one on the way; two brothers Roy (Nancy) Mahnesmith of Buda, IL, Fred Mahnesmith, of Buda, IL, and one sister, Garnafay Workheiser, of Galesburg, IL.

She was preceded in death by her son, Mark A. Horton; two granddaughters; one grandson; one great-grandson and three brothers.

A Memorial Event will be held at a later date. Cremation Rites have been accorded.

Memorials may be directed to Elizabeth’s family in her memory.

Our church sign was dedicated today in memory of Donna Cunningham. Thank you, Phil for all of your work on this project.
