"27. Father, Forgive."

Written and Composed by Glenda B. Schales, this hymn focuses on the power of forgiveness. It is formatted to be a prayer, and serves as a commentary not merely on the necessity of forgiveness, but on the beauty and power of act of forgiving itself.

Verse one begins with the greatest act of forgiveness, the focal point on which God's mercy may reach us, Christ upon the cross. Christ's own words are followed up with a powerful statement of the triumph of Christ that could not be conquered by death.

Verse two moves to Stephen before he is executed by stoning. He serves as an example of prevailing faith and the overwhelming might of mercy. All mankind of needs Christ, both Stephen and his executioners alike, a truth Stephen recognized until his mortal end. In the face of certain doom, faith enables one to not only conquer death, but also the capacity to plead that God's mercy may reach everyone.

Verse three concludes with the perspective of one reciting this hymn. With Christ's sacrifice, and the faith of Stephen as example, Glenda seeks to walk this same path. In doing so she encourages each of us to do the same.

Verse 1: “Father, forgive; They know not what they do,” Christ cried from the depths of piercing, agonizing pain. Mercy and love, victorious o’er His suff’ring, Flowed forth with the grace their hate could not constrain.
Verse 2: “Lord, do not hold this sin against their souls.” These words Stephen pled before he took his dying breath. Mercy and love prevailed with mighty power, And grace did bestow a peace that conquered death.
Verse 3: Lord, please forgive the ones who trouble me; They know not the hurt and crushing anguish that they give. Mercy and love this triumph over suff’ring, For I realize my own sins, You forgive.

This hymn was designed specifically to be sung without accompanying instruments.

Hymn focus: "Nearer, My God, to Thee"

1 Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
2 Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I'd be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
3 There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
4 Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
so by my woes to be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
5 Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

This beautiful Hymn was written by Sarah Flower Adams in 1841. Verses 2-5 play with imagery from Jacob's story in the book of Genesis, while the 1st and 5th verses focus on christian living and the heavenly reward that awaits. All of these dwell on an ever present effort to bring oneself to a closer relationship through christ to God.
