Jesus’ Personal Promise
by Pastor Ken and Joyverse

John 14:13

Whatever you will ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Imagine that Jesus is personally saying to you: “Whatever you will ask in My name, that will I do.”

What would you ask for?

Are you asking for those things now in your daily prayers?

Asking for something in Jesus’ name is not the spiritual equivalent of saying a “magic word” that makes your selfish desires come true. Jesus’ name holds all the power of the universe. The devil flinches and falls away when he hears it. Asking in Jesus’ name means requesting God for things that honor Christ and that allow you to be more like Him.

Greater faith. More diligence in prayer. Opportunities to serve. Courage to reach out to others to share the message of the Gospel. When you ask for such things first, all the rest — things of this world, like money, job security, and justice served to someone who offends you — may come.

When you ask for things that will bring honor and glory to God, He will always find ways to richly reward those who put Him first.

Reflection

How can I have a pure heart that desires to honor God? What am I asking God to do with my life?

Prayer

Dear Lord, Please give me a pure heart that desires to honor You first. May my prayers be only for things with which You desire to bless me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Success God’s Way
by Heather Tietz

Proverbs 22:4

The result of humility and the fear of the LORD is wealth, honor, and life.
It has been a belief throughout Jewish history that wealth, honor, and long life were blessings of God.

The forefathers of Judaism — Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — were men of large herds, big families, and long lives.

Then came Jesus, delivering Himself into the poverty of the world, born in a barn. His human father’s occupation as a carpenter would have provided a modest standard of living. Yet, Jesus’ parents were undoubtedly blessed; they were raising the Son of God!

As an adult, Jesus wasn’t wealthy. “He had no place to lay His head,” Matthew 8:20 says. He wasn’t honored in worldly ways. In fact, His life was so humble that many Jews overlooked Him. He didn’t wear God’s blessings the way they thought the Messiah would.

Yet Jesus was certainly blessed. His ministry was the most successful of any! It reached to the ends of the earth, lasted thousands of years beyond His lifespan, and has changed lives like no other.

Jesus set a new standard for successful living. God’s blessings could come wrapped in wealth, grand positions, and long earthly lives, but Jesus and His disciples attest that they don’t always. Success from God is the hope and joy that comes from faith. Any wealth, honor, and long life we may miss on earth will reward us in heaven.

Reflection

What does a successful Christian life look like to me? How am I experiencing that? Where am I lacking?

Prayer

Heavenly Lord, You always provide! Help me to see how I am blessed every day by You. Help me to feel Your abundance surrounding me. In Jesus’ dear name I pray, Amen.

Let the Peace of God Rule in Your Heart
by Pastor Ken

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body, and be thankful.
There are so many tragic, horrible stories from all around the world of people suffering at the hands of corrupt and rebellious rulers.

Sadly, this suffering is not something new. It has been happening for centuries.

However, there is hope for even the most horrible situations. Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), who served as the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, made an indelible mark on the “page” of true and fair leadership.

On July 18, 2010, to commemorate Mandela’s ninety-second birthday, U.S. President Barak Obama said, “We are grateful to continue to be blessed with his extraordinary vision, leadership, and spirit. And we strive to build upon his example of tolerance, compassion, and reconciliation.”

Mandela was born into a situation he did not create, into a world over which he had little control. According to the rules of his country, he should not have amounted to anything. Yet his peaceful conviction of the value of every human life changed the course of history.

All throughout the Bible, you can see how important it is to let the peace of God govern your heart. In doing so, you will find it easier to live peacefully with those you call family, friends, and fellow citizens.

Reflection

What changes might I expect to see if I let God’s peace constantly rule in my heart?

Prayer

Dear God, Thank You for Your peace. May it rule my heart and may my life serve to bring peace to others. In the name of Jesus, who is my Prince of Peace, I pray, Amen.

Restoring the Outcast
by Ami Hendrickson

Jeremiah 30:17

“For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds,” says the LORD, “because they have called you an outcast, saying, ‘It is Zion, whom no man seeks after.’”
My dogs love to gambol in the woods and in the field, always on the lookout for something interesting.

Our walk is the highlight of their doggy day.

But no matter how happy the dogs are to go roving with me, we rarely take a walk without Zephyr, the youngest, rolling in something unspeakable. She has a talent for finding the foulest spoor and coating herself with it.

Our walks often end with Zephyr getting a much-needed bath. As I shampoo her, massaging odor-canceling suds into whatever travesty is coating her fur, the other dogs will lurk on the periphery, afraid to get too close lest I bathe them too.

Every time I bathe Zephyr, she acts repentant. But I know as soon as we go for a walk again, she will need another bath.

All too often, my walk with God mirrors Zephyr’s walks with me. I look forward to spending time with my Lord. But then I go my own way and end up covered in this world’s filth. Today’s verse is a constant reminder that no matter what others may think — no matter how badly I stink — God promises to cleanse me. I am not His pet; I am His child. He will restore me.

All I need to do is allow Him to.

Reflection

When I feel like an outcast, what is my response to God? How do I want to respond?

Prayer

Holy Lord, I claim Your promises of health and restoration. Please wash me and cleanse me. Thank You for loving this outcast so completely. In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
