The enclosures, which blighted the English peasantry, inspired Irish poet Oliver Goldsmith to write his famous elegy, “The Deserted Village." Goldsmith's poem, though written nearly two centuries earlier, is the poetic analogue to Father Vincent McNabb's protest against the urbanization of the modern world and the enclosures, so to speak, of the modern mind. McNabb was likely familiar with the poem, as he was a scholar of English poetry. Regardless, the poem's sentiments harmonize with his own. Take this passage, for instance, concerning the plight of the displaced land-worker:

"If to the city sped-What waits him there? / To see profusion that he must not share; / To see ten thousand baneful arts combined / To pamper luxury, and thin mankind; / To see those joys the sons of pleasure know, / Extorted from his fellow creature's woe."

"Even now, the devastation is begun, / And half the business of destruction is done, / Even now, methinks, as pondering here I stand, / I see the rural Virtues leave the land."

A family milk cow can provide 2-5 gallons of milk per day. On the homestead this translates into high nutrition for one’s family in the form of milk, cheese, sour cream, and butter. It is also food for chickens, pigs, and sheep. Her calves are a source of beef for ones family. GK Chesterton recommends three acres and a milk cow as a means to heal the social order due to a cows ability to bring such a high amount of domestic productivity into the basic unit of society, the family.
