In our study of Exodus we finally come to chapter 20 and the Ten Commandments. Lord willing, we will cover two of the commandments each week and we plan to finish Exodus 20 right before Advent. Perhaps you think you know the 10 Commandments pretty well. I sure did! But I learned a ton in my study. I hope you will join the folks at New Hope this Sunday for the first of these messages. This Sunday we will continue our study in Exodus 19:16-25. God speaks to Moses and tells him to "Warn the People." God is going to come down on Mount Sinai and the people need to be prepared. They have to be ready to meet the Almighty God. How gracious it was of God to issue this warning! How merciful! When God comes down there will be no excuses. There will be no other way but His way! And so it is for us. Jesus came down and there is no other way. There will be no excuses. We need to be ready and prepared to meet the Lord!

Having now arrived at Exodus 19 we have come to one of the most important passages in all of the Old Testament. The children of Israel are encamped at the foot of the mountain of God and God is about to speak to them audibly and enter into a covenant with them. It is both a turning point in biblical history and in world history. God prepares his people to hear his word!

Exodus 18. I don't know why, but this has always been one of my favorite stories in the Old Testament. I love the expression of "family." I really like the picture of Jethro coming to Moses and saying, "Moses, I brought your wife back!" And there is just so much to learn from the interaction between Jethro and Moses. I would be willing to wager that you have had an experience something like this. Have you ever seen God do a wonderful thing in your life, answer a special prayer, heal, or provide? And while you are still rejoicing and praising a brand new trial comes your way? That seems very familiar to me!
That is exactly what happens to the children of Israel in our next study. Last time they saw God provide water from a rock. The next thing they know is that they are being attacked by the Amalekites! Sunday's study will look closely at how Moses and the people dealt with this new trial.

We would love to have you join us this morning at 9:30am (PT) for the next message in our Exodus series, "To Marah and Elim." The children of Israel move on from the Red Sea into the wilderness and so begins their journey during which God makes them into a nation and teaches them to walk with him.
