Spending Time With Jesus

As Jesus and His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord”s feet listening to what He said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to Him and asked, “Lord, don”t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me”; Martha, Martha, ”the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed-or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her”
Luke 10:38-42

Every time I read this scripture it bothered me. Why would Jesus chastise Martha? She was preparing for His visit to her home. Martha was providing sleeping arrangements, purchasing enough food for many and preparing the food. Being a Martha, I understood how she felt. If I were doing all of these preparations, I would have expected my sister to help. Upon a deeper study of this verse in our Wednesday morning Bible study, I discovered that Jesus wasn’t chastising Martha. In fact, He was probably happy that she was preparing for His visit, but He wanted her to understand that Mary was doing what was most important. I love organizing, planning, and preparing for family dinners and gatherings. On many occasions, such as Christmas and Easter, I, like Martha, let it consume me. I get too busy to stop and give my time and effort into what is most important. I read this scripture today and it no longer bothers me. I have decided that I want to be more like Mary. I can’t spend time at His feet listening to His teachings, but I will one day. Until then I will talk with Him through prayer and read His word. I still like being a Martha. I think that hospitality is a gift from God and it is a gift that I love but I realize that I must never forget what is most important, spending time with Jesus.

Prayer: Thank you God for your word and the teachings of your son, Jesus. Amen

Endurance

Romans 5:3-5 – Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know suffering produces perseverance; perseverance character; character hope.

My hobby is running. I’m not very quick so you could also call it jogging. I started years ago when I was very stressed and hoped it would help my mental health. Back then, I could only run about a minute before my lungs and legs were screaming to stop. As I practiced more and more over the years, I eventually could run (slowly) for a couple of hours at a time. Running can be uncomfortable. My mouth feels dry, my legs are heavy and some days I feel like I just can’t do it. Each time I suffer a little I’m gaining endurance and the confidence to do more difficult things.

In our spiritual walk (or jog), we are told suffering builds our perseverance, our character and our hope. Looking back on my life I can see how I’ve made it through difficult seasons that were even more uncomfortable than a 10-mile run. Those were the times I learned to rely on God and not on myself; times when I felt like I just couldn’t do it. That’s where hope comes in! Reflecting on what challenges God has already brought me through makes me confident that with him I can endure whatever the future holds.

Dear God, help me endure and put my hope in you. Amen

From a program organizer - “While I was teaching at a local high school, one of my students, who was in the foster care system, was being transferred to another home out of the school district. His social worker showed up at the school to transport him. The social worker helped him clean his locker out putting his personal items in a large trash bag. I offered to try to locate a school athletic bag for his stuff. The student told me not to worry about it. He stated that he always carries his clothes and stuff in a large trash bag. I was offended for him. No one should have their personal items tossed in a trash bag like garbage for transport or storage.

Beckley WV VFW Post 4469 has taken this issue on as a community service project encouraging donations of new or used luggage and other needed items to this worthy cause.” – Thank you!

Check the poster for details - Items can be dropped off at Perry Memorial United Methodist Church at 100 Perry Lane, Shady Spring WV call 304-763-2599 to make arrangements for a time to drop off items at the Church. We will make sure they get delivered to Beckley VFW Post 4469
