Star of Hope Family Services Announces New Name, Honoring More Than 100 Years of Faith-Based Service - Burlington United Methodist Family Services is proud to announce its new name: Star of Hope Family Services, a ministry of the United Methodist Church.
The rebranding marks an exciting new chapter in the organization's more than 100-year history while honoring the legacy on which it was founded.
Originally established in 1913 as the Star of Hope Children's Refuge, the organization has spent generations serving West Virginia's children, families, and communities with compassion, faith, and hope. Returning to the Star of Hope name reconnects the organization with its roots while better reflecting the broad range of services it provides today. While the name is changing, the organization remains a ministry of the United Methodist Church, continuing its longstanding commitment to serving others through faith, compassion, and excellence.
"Our new name reflects both our history and our future," said Mia Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Star of Hope Family Services. "While our name is changing, our mission remains the same—to provide Christ-centered, compassionate, and inclusive care that empowers children, strengthens families, and builds healthier communities throughout West Virginia. Our identity is rooted in more than a century of faithful service, and we are honored to continue that legacy as a ministry of the United Methodist Church."
The rebrand comes as the organization continues to expand programs that serve children, youth, adults, and families across the state. Services include foster care, adoption, residential treatment, community-based behavioral health services, child advocacy, transitional living, recovery services, parenting support, and numerous community outreach programs.
The new identity also helps eliminate longstanding confusion associated with the organization's previous name while creating a stronger, more recognizable brand that reflects the agency's statewide reach and commitment to serving all who need hope and support. Although the name has changed, the organization's faith-based mission, values, and connection to the United Methodist Church remain unchanged.
The organization's mission continues to guide every program and service: Empowering children, families, and communities to reach their fullest potential through Christ-centered holistic care and support.
To celebrate this milestone, Star of Hope Family Services will host two community Rededication Celebrations:
Burlington Campus, Thursday, July 23, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
120 Hope Lane, Burlington, WV 26710
Beckley Campus

2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
✂ Rededication Ribbon Cutting Ceremony 3:00pm
4700 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, WV 25801
Community members, partners, supporters, alumni, and friends are invited to attend the celebration at the location most convenient for them. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the facilities, meet staff, learn about the organization's programs, and celebrate this exciting new chapter together.
For more than a century, the organization has remained committed to providing hope, healing, and opportunity to those it serves. The transition to Star of Hope Family Services represents not a change in mission, but a renewed commitment to carrying that mission forward for generations to come as a ministry of the United Methodist Church.
