Spending Time With Jesus
As Jesus and His disciples were on their way, He came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to Him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord”s feet listening to what He said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to Him and asked, “Lord, don”t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me”; Martha, Martha, ”the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed-or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her”
Luke 10:38-42
Every time I read this scripture it bothered me. Why would Jesus chastise Martha? She was preparing for His visit to her home. Martha was providing sleeping arrangements, purchasing enough food for many and preparing the food. Being a Martha, I understood how she felt. If I were doing all of these preparations, I would have expected my sister to help. Upon a deeper study of this verse in our Wednesday morning Bible study, I discovered that Jesus wasn’t chastising Martha. In fact, He was probably happy that she was preparing for His visit, but He wanted her to understand that Mary was doing what was most important. I love organizing, planning, and preparing for family dinners and gatherings. On many occasions, such as Christmas and Easter, I, like Martha, let it consume me. I get too busy to stop and give my time and effort into what is most important. I read this scripture today and it no longer bothers me. I have decided that I want to be more like Mary. I can’t spend time at His feet listening to His teachings, but I will one day. Until then I will talk with Him through prayer and read His word. I still like being a Martha. I think that hospitality is a gift from God and it is a gift that I love but I realize that I must never forget what is most important, spending time with Jesus.
Prayer: Thank you God for your word and the teachings of your son, Jesus. Amen
