The place looks well cared for, as Bill and Melanie Crew continue to keep things tidy. A new feature is the presence of green grass as the seed they sowed in the Spring takes root.

Here are a few pictures from a Saturday visit to the cemetery. Do you know the Driver story? Do you know what part they played as some of the early settlers of this area?

Here is a tidbit: Samuel Driver settled his family in Barnsboro as early as 1740 and became one of the largest land owners in the area. Their property was located on the Northeast side of the Village of Barnsboro, and the Driver plantation was on that tract of land. The Driver’s mill was located at the creek crossing, at the bottom of the hill, along what is now known as Center Street as you cross into Sewell. The mill was still in operation as late as 1893.

Barnsboro and the surrounding area (Mantua Township) is rich with human history. Make it a point to discover it and to share it with your children.

May 16, 2020 - Update from Bill Crew: We are slowly getting the grass to fill in. Our goal is to get at least 90 percent of it to grow in this year and get the trees removed.

Bill and Melanie Crew continue to care for this historic cemetery. They've begun Spring cleaning and have the property in great shape. Bill has recently treated the ground with fertilizer and grass seed. We look forward to seeing the progress here. Thank you to the both of you.

The preservation and care of this historic cemetery goes beyond the regular cutting of grass and general maintenance. As detailed in a prior post, this past Fall brought the modifying and stabilizing of a portion of the stone wall. Current discussion includes our wanting to take this effort a step further, by restoring it to more of what it may have looked like long ago.

One of the major issues that we are faced with is 3 trees that loom overhead, posing a potential hazard to the headstones, the wall and the neighbors utilities. Saving trees is most times the priority. However, it was not intended that trees grow wild within the walls of this sacred place.

We have been in this challenging position at this site and other cemeteries in our Township in the past. We have been fortunate to have Margie Love and her team at Bethel Mill Contracting volunteer their services several times. Now we would like to share this worthy community service opportunity with others.

We are looking for a professional tree removal service that would be interested in helping us (and the community) with voluntarily cutting down and removing these trees. If you are that company, please message me here or call me (Jeff Gellenthin) at 856-468-3838. If you know of a goodhearted business out there, please let them know about this opportunity. Pass this on. Thank you!

Here is a wonderful update.
