Established at the laying of the cornerstone for Sewanee: The University of the South, the University Choir has sung at all important services for the college since 1860. The University Choir consists of 30-40 dedicated undergraduates who sing weekly services in All Saint's Chapel as well as monthly Evensongs. The choir is directed by Dr. Robert Delcamp and plays an integral part in the lifestyle
of the community. Choir membership is open to any student - no audition or previous experience is required. One of the highlights of the school year at Sewanee is the annual Advent services of Lessons and Carols that regularly attract as many as 3000 people to campus. At these services, the University Choir performs with special guest instrumentalists and premiers works that have been composed especially for the choir. The University Choir is an active touring ensemble. It has performed extensively throughout the southeastern United States as well as in Colorado, New York and Canada. Since 1979, the choir has made ten tours of England, singing the service of Choral Evensong in more than 20 cathedrals and abbey churches. These include the cathedrals of Winchester, Salisbury, Wells, Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford, Bristol, York Minster, Windsor Castle, St. Albans, Rochester, and Canterbury, as well as the abbeys of Bath, Tewkesbury and Westminster. The University Choir has also sung Evensong in the American Cathedral at Paris. The University Choir plans to return to England in the spring of 2015.
