Community of St. Mary, Southern Province

Community of St. Mary, Southern Province We are a women’s Benedictine community in the Episcopal Church. The Community of St. Our patron, St.

Mary, Southern Province, is a women’s Benedictine community within the Episcopal Church that expresses its way of life through care for the body, the soul, and the earth. We seek to address the spiritual and temporal needs of our society through our life of prayer and solitude, our ministry to the poor, through spiritual direction and hospitality, the various endeavors of our Organic Prayer Progra

m and our website, and through our work in churches-both in the USA and the Philippines. We serve as a spiritual resource for all seekers, especially those interested in Benedictine spirituality, care for creation, and concern for the poor. Mary, is the model for our “yes” to God, through which we respond to the needs of our society and practice responsible stewardship. Our convent, its gardens and grounds represent part of our contribution to the healing of the earth and its creatures. Through them and through us, we seek to offer a quiet, friendly environment where we and others may listen to God, learn from God’s Word and from creation, and put our faith into practice by promoting a healthy, balanced and compassionate lifestyle for all.

Today the church remembers Enmegahbowh, the first recognized Native American priest in the Episcopal Church who was ordained in 1859. His name is from Enami'egaabaw, meaning "He that prays [for his people while] standing." He was a member of the Ojibwe tribe.

Almighty God, who led your pilgrim people of old by fire and cloud: Grant that the ministers of your church, following the example of your servant Enmegahbowh, may lead your people with fiery zeal and gentle humility; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

This past Sunday, June 7th, Sister Elizabeth preached at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sherwood, Tennessee. Sr. Ines, our Sister in the Philippines, was active in the Sisters' ministry at Epiphany from 2000-2007 by participating in their weekly Sunday liturgy and leading their singing. After Sr. Elizabeth spent several weeks in the Philippines in April and May, she was able to bring greetings from Sister Ines during her time there on Sunday. Sister Elizabeth preached about the call of Abram and Matthew, of Sr. Lucy and Sr. Ines, and encouraged the congregation to listen for their call in 2026.

This morning, Sister Marcella gave a presentation at Christ Church Parish in Saluda, Virginia after their Sunday service about her life as an Episcopal nun, with time for Q&A. This parish is where her grandparents attend and her parents also were there to support her. Thanks for getting the word out about Episcopal monastic life, Sister Marcella!
