At one point or another, life will break us open. This is when we need resilience most—but as psychologist Dr. Sherry Hamby reveals, many of us are going about it the wrong way. Resilience isn’t something you either have or don’t. Instead, it is a modifiable process—meaning anyone can learn, practice, and benefit from it across every stage of life."

Welcome Picnic is Coming August 23rd! — Everyone is invited to kick off a new program year and welcome neighbors new and old. There will be fried chicken, and all kinds of salads, sides and desserts. Please sign up on the sheet in Kennerly to bring your favorite salad, side dish, or dessert. There is also a need for volunteers to help with setup and take down. We will be on the lawn (weather permitting) after the second service. All are welcome!

Calling Sewanee’s Senior Community Members: Help us welcome some of Sewanee’s newest students with lunch, fun games, and stories about Sewanee! We would love for them to hear why you love Sewanee and what makes this place so special! Friday August 21st, 11:30am, Sewanee Senior Center, 5 Ball Park Rd. RSVP to 931-598-0771 no later than Wednesday August 19th. Suggested lunch donation $5.

Thurmond Library Book Sale : Thurmond Library needs volunteers for its annual book sale on Labor Day weekend. Volunteers are needed set up for the sale beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday (9/1) and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Additionally, volunteers are needed from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, to pack unsold books.
The four-day sale, which is primarily self-serve runs from Friday, Sept. 4, to noon on Monday, Sept. 7, opening at 8 a.m. and closing about 6 p.m. Donations may be dropped off at the Kennerly Hall Tuesday-, Wednesday or Thursday, Sept. 1 -3. Hardbacks will cost $2 each or three for $5 while paperbacks will cost $1 each or three for $2. Cash or check is preferred since an IOU is the only form of credit available.

Sunday August 2 is CAC Pantry Sunday. In July, CAC distributed food to 133 households, reaching approximately 348 neighbors. To continue serving our neighbors, CAC is in need of individual snacks, granola bars, apples, macaroni & cheese, toilet paper, and toiletries (shampoo, soap, deodorant) for this month’s Pantry Sunday collection. The Community Action Committee is more than a food pantry as it strives to meet the basic human needs of those living in crisis in and around Sewanee. Neighbors can visit Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM to receive weekly groceries and inquire about assistance with utility expenses. To learn more about CAC services, call (931) 598-5927.

Do you have a book you buy any time you come across it in used books? The Little Prince is one of mine. The themes are deep and symbolic without (I would argue) straight-up allegory. The simple, poetic writing invites contemplation. Join me for a journey with the Little Prince and his pilot friend as they consider wisdom, folly, and true friendship.

Coffee Hour Needs You! Please consider volunteering for this fun and meaningful ministry. Light duties include: set-up Sunday morning in kitchen before 11 am service for fellowship afterwards. Simple snacks may include fruit, cheese & crackers, nuts, store-bought cookies, etc. For more information contact Cheryl Lankhaar, at [email protected] or simply sign up on the sheet in the kitchen.
