As the program year comes to a close, we find ourselves filled with gratitude and thanks for the community of St. Martin's. Week after week, year after year, this community shows up. You teach, pray, sing, serve, encourage, welcome, and love. Together, you help create a place where children are known, youth are valued, and people of all ages can grow in faith.

According to parishioner, Lew Heck, the stones around Heck Hall are ballast stones and were once used to steady a ship. Ballast stones were historically used to weigh down empty ships, lower the center of gravity, and improve stability. They were placed deep in the belly of a ship, holding the center and helping vessels stay steady in rocky seas. Old sailing ships used solid materials—iron or lead ingots, stones, or bricks—which could be swapped for cargo at various ports of call.

The faithful people serving on our Vestry—both now and over the past 72 years, are the ballast stones of St. Martin's. These servants of the church hold the center. They help keep St. Martin’s steady, no matter what weather surrounds us.

And the image has stayed with me all week, because the truth is: every one of us needs ballast.

Tonight our 8th grade students graduate from St. Martin's! This morning the students practiced for tonight's ceremony. We are proud to see them go forth and share the lessons they have learned with Confidence, Compassion and Character.

A Prayer for Graduates:
"Lord, we lift up every graduate stepping into this new season. Grant them wisdom as they make decisions about their future, careers, and the paths you are calling them to follow. Strengthen their hearts when they face doubt, and remind them that your presence goes with them every step of the way. May they build lives rooted in your Word and honor you in all they do. Amen."

Life has a way of tossing us around. What are the ballast stones in your life? What keeps you steady? Often, the things that steady us are ordinary and practiced. And perhaps that is one of the quiet gifts of a church community: we become ballast stones for one another. See what opportunities we have to be in community this summer, in our weekly E-pistle: https://conta.cc/43zSsdt

Have you ever noticed that the altar, baptismal font, and Memorial Garden are in direct alignment? The visual message in the continuation of the main aisle straight out into the garden is intentional and meaningful. Our departed brothers and sisters in Christ are close in our hearts and physically close to us as we worship.

For Pentecost Sunday we asked parishioners to "Come be fire!"
We were thrilled to have so many come out dressed as FIRE - in reds, oranges and yellows. This Pentecost we burn with a love stronger than fear. Stronger than despair. Stronger even than death.
