The historic carriage shed at the Caroline Church of Brookhaven in Setauket was restored this month after several years of deterioration.

Richard Visconti, longtime pastor of the church, said repairing the interior of the wooden shed constructed in 1887, and having the roof replaced has always been a priority, but the congregation lacked funds to make the improvements.

“Taking care of a historic building is always a challenge," Visconti said. "And you need to take care of them.”

The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation awarded the church a $10,950 matching grant for phase two of the project, which included replacing the cedar roof atop the shed.

That project was completed over a week in mid-January, church officials said.

The first phase of the restoration, which was also funded in part by a grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, was completed last year and included installing wooden posts to stabilize the structure which had been leaning for years.

“The whole building needed to be righted before we could even attempt to put the roof on,” said Barbara Russell, junior warden at the church.

The seven bay shed was originally constructed by seven church parishioners who, on Sundays, parked their horses there before going inside the church for worship.

Church officials said the shed is an iconic structure, and the only known remaining carriage shed on church grounds in Suffolk County.

The church, founded in 1723, and cemetery is listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places, church officials said.

Within the designation are four contributing structures deemed historically important: the church, parish house, barn and carriage shed, church officials said.

The church, erected in 1729, overlooks the Setauket Village Green, Brookhaven’s first settlement in 1655.

Community organizations also used the shed for events until its condition deteriorated and the repairs were required.

Visconti said he feared the structure could have collapsed in a future storm.

For over a year, we didn’t feel like it was safe to put cars in there,” the pastor said. “When you see the building deteriorate over time, it’s gonna need some help and assistance."

The church, which celebrated its 296th anniversary this month, and the carriage house fit within the mission of the Gardiner foundation — a not-for-profit organization aiming to promote the history of Long Island and New York State.

“The woodshed, which is original, is an important piece of Long Island history and given the condition that it was in, the Gardiner foundation felt that it was important to do what it could to preserve it, and Caroline church presented a plan to do that,” said Jody Fisher, spokesperson for the foundation.

What the two grants didn’t cover, the church made up through community and private donations, church officials said.

“The shed will be preserved in a way that people will be able to continue to appreciate it, and more importantly, appreciate the story behind the church,” Fisher said.

CELEBRATING HOLY WEEK 2019

The rites of Holy Week (April 14 – April 21) are ancient and by nature different from the liturgical celebrations of the rest of the Church Year. This difference is meant to focus our attention on the mysteries being celebrated in this sacred time. If the time between Palm Sunday and Easter Day seems endless, it is with a purpose. Time is suspended as we reflect on and celebrate the great mysteries of our salvation.

Passion/Palm Sunday
5:00 PM Saturday and 8:00 AM & 9:30 AM Holy Eucharist and Blessing of The Palms

Palm or Passion Sunday, celebrated this year on April 14, begins with the outdoor blessing of the palms and a symbolic procession into the Church, lead by our children at half past nine o’clock. This service also includes a dramatic Gospel reading of our Lord’s passion. Our liturgy recalls Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, but also demonstrates that our Lord’s mission was to go to the cross.

Maundy Thursday
7:00 PM Choral Holy Eucharist, Stripping of the Altar, & Nightwatch

Maundy Thursday, observed this year on April 18, will begin with a representation of Our Lord’s Institution of the Holy Eucharist. The service also recalls the law of love, in Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. At the conclusion of the service after the sacred vessels are reserved at an altar of repose, the altar and chancel area are stripped of all furnishings to symbolize the complete emptying of Jesus, even to death on a cross. Most of us then depart in silence; some will remain to begin the Gethsemane Watch at the Altar of Repose. These hours of prayer and watch will last until ten o’clock Friday morning.

Good Friday
10:00 AM Stations of the Cross
12:00 Noon Three Village Clergy Association Ecumenical Service at Caroline
5:00 PM Children’s Good Friday Service
7:00 PM Good Friday Liturgy

On this day we remember Jesus’ death on the Cross. For the Stations of the Cross, we will gather to pause for prayer, versicle and response, and the reading of Scripture as we ponder a series of depictions of events in the narrative of Christ’s passion. The Good Friday liturgy in the evening includes John’s passion account, the Solemn Collects, a sermon, Veneration of the Cross, and music. Good Friday is a day of fasting, abstinence, and penance.

Holy Saturday
8:00 AM Liturgy of the Word
8:30 – 9:30 AM Sacrament of Penance

There is no Eucharist this morning. A brief Liturgy of the Word will be offered focusing on the time Christ lay in His tomb before the Easter resurrection. The opportunity for you to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation is extended.

Easter Eve
7:00 PM The Great Vigil of Easter

With the ancient Jewish custom of worshipping from sunset to sunset in mind, on this exciting day we celebrate the Feast of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. This lengthy but beautiful liturgical experience is the central and most important rite of the entire Christian year. Since the third century, this rich service begins in darkness with the lighting of the new fire, from which the Paschal candle is lighted. The Easter Vigil continues with lessons, which trace the history of God’s people in the Old Testament, the renewal of our Baptismal vows, and the first Eucharist of Easter. Exquisite flowers, ‘Alleluias’, bell ringing and glorious hymns mark Easter. Come and give God joyful praise as we enjoy fellowship and the hope of eternal life.

Easter Day
The Sunday of the Resurrection: Easter Day April 21
6:30 AM Sunrise Service (Setauket Beach)
8:00 AM Choral Festal Holy Eucharist
10:00 AM Choral Festal Holy Eucharist

The Celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord on Easter Sunday will take place with joyful music, glorious flowers and striking vestments. The Fifty Days of Easter feasting begins as we remember what Our Lord has accomplished for us!

MEN OF THE CAROLINE CHURCH!

Next Saturday, March 9, 2019 The Brotherhood of St. Andrew meets for our regularly ongoing study of The Acts of the Apostles (with coffee and donuts/bagels in between!).

Last month we began our study of Acts chapters 1-2, describing how—following the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ—the Early Christians grew from 11+1 (they voted to add Matthias to replace the suicidal betrayer Judas Iscariot) to 120 and then swelled by 3,000 more on the Day of Pentecost.

Come and join us at 8:00 a.m. to explore what happens next with miracles of God. We promise to conclude before 10:00 a.m. We all have “Honey-do” chores!

Our focus on the text of St. Luke’s historical account is being supplemented by a video series that takes us to the very locations of the Acts.

Welcome to The Brotherhood!

MEN OF THE CAROLINE CHURCH!

Next Saturday, February 9, The Brotherhood of St. Andrew meets for our regularly scheduled (second Saturday) celebration of Holy Eucharist and ongoing study of The Acts of the Apostles (with coffee and donuts/bagels in between!).

At our meeting next week, we’ll continue with chapters 3-7, in which the number of believers continues to grow in Jerusalem, and the faithful apostles begin to show the power of God through dramatic healing. For this they are imprisoned by the religious authorities who recognize the threat to their established rule.

But after Peter and John are miraculously delivered from prison and persist in preaching that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah, the religious leaders decide to act even more aggressively and accuse one of the newly-appointed deacons (Stephen) of heresy, then condemn and stone him to death, while “a young man named Saul” stands by as an accomplice (holding their clothes so they could throw the rocks more easily).

But read the text for yourself! Then come and join us at 8:00 a.m. We promise to conclude before 10:00 a.m. We all have “Honey-do” chores!

Our focus on the text of St. Luke’s historical account is being supplemented by a video series that takes us to the very locations of the Acts.

Welcome to The Brotherhood!

Dear Friends,

By now you should have received your offering envelopes for the first quarter of 2019; if you regularly use envelopes but did not receive a mailing this week, please give Catherine a call at the office next week so she can follow up with the company and get you your envelopes asap.

By the same token, if you do NOT use envelopes, and received them in this mailing but do not want them in the future, please let her know. For the first mailing, everyone who is considered an "active donor",( meaning you made a donation to Caroline Church within the last 12 months) received envelopes.

While we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused some members, our software did not allow us to separate the on line givers from the envelope users; we have the opportunity to update our lists every quarter before the next mailing, however, so if you tell us not to send them again, we won't!

It's LAST CALL for the anniversary brunch! While today was the deadline for reserving and paying for your seat, we might be able to accommodate a few more; we're practically sold out, so if you want to attend, please contact the office on Tuesday, when we need to provide Bliss with our final headcount.

REMINDER; The Annual Parish Meeting will take place on Wed., January 30, 2019 at 7 pm in the Marco Smith Bldg.

All are encouraged to attend and to participate in voting for members of the vestry. If you need transportation or would like to take advantage of on site babysitting services that night, please call Catherine no later than next Friday, January 25.

COMING SOON TO CAROLINE: Be sure to mark your calendars for some important and fun events coming up in early February:

Sun. Feb. 3 - Our Annual Super Bowl of Caring. Our Youth Group will be collecting money after each of the services on both Saturday and Sunday. All monies will go to help those who are hungry; please give as generously as you are able.

Sat. Feb 9: Three Village Chamber Players Concert at 7:30pm in the church Sun. Feb 10: Scout Sunday

Thank you for your continued support of Caroline Church. I know the weather forecast for this weekend sounds somewhat ominous and definitely cold, so please take appropriate precautions for yourselves as well as your pets.

Blessings,
Cn.Richard🙏

MEN OF THE PARISH OF CAROLINE CHURCH OF BROOKHAVEN:

You are invited to join us for a meeting of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew on Saturday, January 12, at 8:00 a.m.

Following the celebration of Holy Communion, followed by coffee and bagels, we will begin a study of The Book of Acts of the Apostles, St. Luke’s account of the growth of the Early Church. To assist our reading of the text, we will be viewing a video that takes us to every site and location mentioned in The Acts. We will concentrate our reading on the first three chapters, in which Luke explains his reason for writing the text, describes the Ascension and its aftermath, including the Feast of Pentecost and the miraculous gift of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and other new believers.

The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is not a private club within the Caroline parish. We are the same men who sit near you in the pews on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings. We are simple believers in Jesus Christ seeking to benefit from fellowship with other guys willing to engage in “Prayer, Study, and Service,” as our shield/logo above states.

Come and spend a couple of hours with us this Saturday morning (and the second Saturdays in February, March, April, and May). We also welcome your teenage sons or collegians still at home on Christmas break. They will benefit from being part of a group that seeks to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves.

Blessings, DBL / BRUCE

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Len Calone and the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, I write today to invite you to attend an informational meeting about the Brotherhood to be held on Saturday, November 10. The meeting is an opportunity, without any obligation or commitment on your part, to find out about the Brotherhood and the role it plays at Caroline Church. Most people at the church know the Brotherhood exists but few can tell you exactly what it does.

We will start at 8am with a Church Service, followed by some coffee, donuts and bagels, and a chance to chat. Then we will have a short presentation about the Brotherhood. Our meetings never go past 10am.

If you can spare a few hours on the morning of November 10th, please join us. We would love to at least let you know what the Brotherhood of St.Andrews is about, and share some time with you.

Please call our parish administrator, Catherine at 631.941-4245 and let her know if you will be joining us. The men of the Brotherhood look forward to spending about an hour or so with you, sharing our thoughts about this ministry at Caroline Church.

Regards,

Don Muffly
