KENYA SPECIAL SCHOOL UPDATE 🙌

The finishing work is going well on the Teachers accommodations. They are working quickly and recently completed tiling, plastering the walls, fitting the window gratings ready for glass panels to go in, plumbing and electrical, and the ceiling
is in.

They also plan to use the funds we sent to do as much as they can to complete the washrooms in the second dormitory that we built last year before the rainy season starts mid-October. This way there won't be challenges getting the boys up to use the washrooms in the original dormitory as they have been doing.

Joel is doing a great job overseeing this project and I am really happy with the work. Bishop Doreen is working hard on getting us a Head Teacher for the school who is
special needs trained and has the right qualities, competence, and experience to run the school well into the future.

The children are learning well and improving all the time, they are so happy to be at the school.

MENTORING AT LOCAL SCHOOLS

I have met with different school family liaisons in our area and it seems there is a real need for student mentors. “Lunch Pals” is a great mentor program available where a mentor is paired with a student who could use a caring adult to meet with during lunch. Mentors meet with the student once a week (or every other week). This program lasts the majority of the school year.

I have talked with a few people who have been a lunch pal and they have seen how the children grow positively from this short time each week with them. It is really changing children’s lives.

Mentors do need to be registered into the school system, background checked and fingerprinted, however, if we have a few people interested I can arrange to have this process done here at church all at one time and free of charge.

There is free mentor training provided for this program and it can be done online or in person so we can arrange to have that here too.

At this point I am just wanting to hear from anyone who would like to be a “Lunch Pal”, so please talk to me, email me at [email protected] or call the church office 727 391-4769.
