When I haven't written in awhile I pull one of my old ones out to post ... I let God workout the timing:
A Grandson comes home by Roy M. Wasson
Grandpa I’m sorry I didn’t help you move that stone
Like you asked me to do.
I came home to move it for you.
I only wish you were here.
But the stone is gone too.
You baptized me in that creek.
It was on that long fishing week.
I’m sorry I was impatient growing up.
I should have driven your pickup truck.
But I wanted faster things.
And I moved away.
But there was no place to stay.
I roamed around
Missing this little town …
And all you taught me to do
Mostly I missed you.
I really miss you.
I can’t bear to walk up that little hill
Where you said you’d pray for me.
That rock you wanted to sit on
Would not be there.
I’m sorry back then I didn’t care.
It’s been months since you’ve been gone.
I should have come back.
But now I’m on track.
Grandpa I miss you.
I’ve got a boy to pray for now.
I’ve got to do it somehow.
This path is more worn down
Than many much nearer town.
I find a clearing of trees.
Logs made into seats.
A spot to make a camp
A fire pit never used …
And there by the old tree
Was that stone I was to move
Setting right where you want it to be
It was there you prayed for me
My name scratched deep into the tree
Five hundred twenty-three
Was the number of the marks below my name
The last few marks were not very deep.
Your last marks for me.
I sat on that rock and prayed.
I thanked God for you.
I’ll do what I told you I would do.
I scratched my boys name deep into the tree.
I prayed for an hour.
and scratched a mark below his name.
Grandpa I miss you.
But like you I will make do.
I’ve got a new truck
I think it will last me a spell.
I like talking like you.
My son will too.
