Become a Person of Truth
Psalm 119:42–43 (NLT)
“Then I can answer those who taunt me, for I trust in your word. Do not sn**ch your word of truth from me, for your regulations are my only hope.”
Most of us like to be liked.
We enjoy kindness, encouragement, acceptance, and good relationships. There is nothing wrong with wanting to treat people well. In fact, Scripture calls us to love others and treat them with kindness.
But sometimes our desire to be liked can become more important to us than our commitment to truth.
We may hesitate to say what needs to be said because we're afraid someone might be offended. We might overlook something that needs to be confronted because we don't want conflict. We may even remain silent when we know the truth because speaking it could cost us someone's approval.
But kindness and truth are not enemies.
Sometimes the most loving thing we can do for someone is tell them the truth.
The psalmist understood the importance of truth. He didn't simply say that he knew God's Word. He said, “I trust in your word.”
His confidence wasn't based on people's opinions or his circumstances. His confidence was rooted in what God had said.
That's important because people change. Circumstances change. Feelings change. Opinions change.
God's truth does not.
There will be times when God's Word encourages us, and there will be times when it challenges us. Sometimes it will comfort us, and sometimes it will make us uncomfortable.
But even when God's truth exposes something in our lives that needs to change, we can trust that He is working for our good.
Jesus said: “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
—John 8:32 (NLT)
Truth doesn't always feel good initially, but truth brings freedom.
We cannot change what we refuse to acknowledge. We cannot surrender something we refuse to admit. We cannot grow beyond something we continually make excuses for.
That's why we need to become people of truth.
Being a person of truth means being honest with God, honest with ourselves, and honest with others.
It means speaking truth without being cruel.
It means receiving correction without becoming defensive.
It means admitting when we're wrong.
It means choosing integrity when nobody is watching.
And most importantly, it means allowing God's Word to have the final say in our lives.
You don't have to be mean to be truthful.
You don't have to be argumentative to stand for truth.
You don't have to win every discussion.
Simply live the truth, speak the truth in love, and trust God with the results.
There may be times when choosing truth means someone doesn't understand you or even doesn't like you. But our ultimate goal isn't to gain everyone's approval.
Our goal is to be faithful to God.
The psalmist said, “your regulations are my only hope.”
That's where our hope belongs.
Not in people's opinions.
Not in circumstances.
Not in our feelings.
Our hope is in the unchanging Word of God.
Something to Think About It!
Am I more concerned with being liked than with living according to God's truth?
Is there an area of my life where God is asking me to face an uncomfortable truth?
Do I speak truth with love, or do I sometimes use "truth" as an excuse to be harsh?
Can the people around me trust that my words are honest and dependable?
Today, choose truth.
Before you speak, ask God to help you speak truth with love.
Before you make a decision, ask, “What does God's Word say?”
And if the Holy Spirit reveals something in your own life that needs to change, don't run from it.
Receive the truth. Surrender to the truth. Walk in the truth.
Because the truth may challenge you today—but it can set you free.
Let us pray this prayer together!
Lord, make me a person of truth.
Help me to trust Your Word even when my circumstances tell me something different. Give me courage to speak truth with love and humility. Keep me from compromising truth simply because I want someone's approval.
When Your Word reveals something in my life that needs to change, give me the humility to receive it and the courage to obey it.
Help me to be honest with You, honest with myself, and honest with others.
Let my words be trustworthy, my actions reflect integrity, and my life point people toward You.
I put my hope in Your Word today.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
