God Sets His Eyes on You

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye. Psalm 32:8

Today’s Scripture:
Psalm 32:6–8
My wife, Sue, and I had just walked five miles across the Mackinac Bridge, which connects the two peninsulas of Michigan. This annual Labor Day event has been a tradition since 1958. We sat down on a park bench to rest, and a man sat next to us to catch his breath as well. Soon his wife and adult daughter joined them, and we learned that his family—also believers in Jesus—had suffered the loss of a teenage daughter, just as we had many years before.

Together, we were able to share how God has sustained us and given us strength and faith throughout the years. It was amazing to think that, among the 33,000 participants that day, we found a family that understood our feelings.

Two families with similar stories finding each other in the middle of a sea of people. It sounds a bit like something that could only happen because of what God told King David in Psalm 32. After David expressed his gratitude to God for protecting and delivering him, he received this encouraging declaration: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with my eye” (v. 8).

God cares for his children and brings them together because they need each other. It is another example of how “the Lord’s great love surrounds those who take refuge in him” (v. 10).

Junk Files

… let us put off every weight and sin that besets us… Hebrews 12:1

Today's writing:

Hebrews 12:1-7, 10, 14

My smart phone sometimes reminds me that I'm not good when it comes to digital cleaning. «Delete the files that are taking up space», says the message. I don't like my phone insisting on me, but if I delete those files, I have more space for what really matters. For example, when my daughter was swimming, I had enough storage to record a video when I made it, instead of unexpectedly realizing that those “basic files” sabotaged my ability to capture the moment.

Files stored on phones are easy to delete. But what happens with the “base files” in the soul? Like on telephones, our souls can be obstructed by things that prevent us from flourishing spiritually. The author of Hebrews understood this reality and urges us to pay close attention to everything that makes us stumble on our walk with God. “Let us put off every weight and sin that besets us”, he writes, and challenges us: “let us run with patience the road that we have before” (Hebrews 12:1).

What weighs you down or makes you stumble? Hebrews encourages us to keep “our eyes on Jesus, the author and consumer of faith” (v. 2), which can help us identify and eliminate the “basic archives” that obstruct our abundant life in Jesus.

Meet to Grow in Christ

[The believers] devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42

Today’s Scripture:
Acts 2:1–6, 36–37

In Monterey Bay, California, a boat captain saw fifteen Pacific dolphins join a super pod of more than two thousand. Different types and ages of dolphins gather to defend themselves against predators, to feed, and to socialize. Even so, the size and diversity made it a rare sight to behold.

The Bible records this unusual gathering of diverse people, pivotal in our faith story. While the disciples were celebrating Passover in Jerusalem, “a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house” (Acts 2:2), and they were “filled with the Holy Spirit,” who enabled them to speak in different tongues (v. 4). People “from every nation under heaven” had also gathered for the Passover (v. 5). When they wondered about the loud noise, each one “heard [the disciples] speaking in their own language” (v. 6). Then Peter proclaimed Jesus as “Lord and Christ” (v. 36), and about three thousand believed and were baptized (v. 41). God’s people lived in community like never before, and He “added to their number daily those who were being saved” (v. 47).

God’s people throughout the world continue to gather to grow in community and proclaim Jesus as Lord. Through us, He will continue to extend His kingdom.
