The kickoff of the Book Buddies program is featured in the Highlands News-Sun! 📰

We are grateful for the coverage as we nurture a love of reading for kids in our community this summer. But the work doesn’t stop there.

We need YOU tomorrow.

Book Buddies is back Wednesday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at Greater Mt.Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church-Sebring, 870 M.L.K. Jr Blvd., Sebring. We are looking for adults who are willing to sit down with a child and read. That’s it. No experience required. Just a heart for kids and 2 hours of your time.

Students ages 5-15 are welcome, and every child goes home with a book and a warm lunch.

Come be somebody’s Book Buddy. 📚

Something special happened in Washington Heights this morning! 📚 The first-ever Book Buddies reading initiative kicked off at Greater Mt.Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church-Sebring, and it was everything we hoped it would be.

Kids from kindergarten through high school came together to read, learn vocabulary, and connect with the adults in their community, including members of the Highlands County Sheriff's Office - Sheriff Paul Blackman, who showed up and showed out! ⭐️

This program was born out of love for this community. The Women of Purpose saw a need to keep students connected to reading during the summer, made some calls, and made it happen. Students got a hot lunch and books to take home. And sitting across from deputies, reading and building trust? That’s the kind of thing that changes a community.

Book Buddies continues every Wednesday in June at Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church (870 MLK Jr Blvd, Sebring) from 10am to noon. July sessions will be held at First Missionary Baptist Church.

Thank you to Champion For Children Advocacy Center for donating the books and to everyone who made this possible!

What a beautiful Saturday! 🙌🏾☀️ Today we were blessed to welcome Elder Jimmy J. Thompson of The Lively Lakeland District to Greater Mt.Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church-Sebring for our 3rd Quarterly Conference, where members shared updates and reports from our church ministries. Then, the Women of Purpose held a luncheon to honor the men of our church — the ones who show up, roll up their sleeves, and keep our grounds and projects going strong. But even in a moment meant to celebrate them, they couldn’t help but serve. That’s just who they are. 💙
