YOU USED TO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS
When kids receive, they do it with honesty, openness, and humility. Somewhere along the way, we forgot how.
Kids are honest about what they need. They're hungry, they're cold, they're tired, they're bored, and they let the adults know without hesitation.
But we have a much harder time with that. Maybe we've internalized that we should be independent. Maybe asking for help feels too vulnerable to bear.
Or maybe we've lost touch with what we even need. Whatever it is, kids invite us to name our brokenness, our pain, and our dependence honestly.
Kids are also open to receive. They don't assume they should meet their own needs, and they don't think their needs are a burden to anyone.
We, somewhere along the way, started showing up full. Pretending we're fine. Pretending we don't need a thing. Kids just show up empty and ready.
Kids are humble too. They don't pretend they're not in need, but they don't carry entitlement either, because they know every bit of it is a gift.
We swing between the two. Some days we feel too worthless to receive from God, other days entitled to it. But it's all a gift, given freely out of His great love for us.
