For 50 years, the Washington State Catholic Conference has helped bring the voice of our Catholic faith into public life.

In this 50th Anniversary reflection, Bishop Eusebio Elizondo reminds us that the WSCC was founded with a bold vision: to defend human dignity, uphold the common good, and ensure that the Gospel continues to shape how we advocate for life, justice, and peace in Washington state.

Over five decades, the WSCC has served as a bridge between Church and state, parishes and policy, faith and action. This work is not only for bishops or staff — it belongs to all of us.

Each of us has a role to play in witnessing to the Gospel in public life: the laity, religious, young people, elders, parishes, schools, and Catholic communities across Washington.

As Bishop Elizondo shares, may we continue this mission with faith, with hope, and above all, with love.

As the WSCC continues celebrating 50 years of Catholic Advocacy in Washington state in 2026, we give thanks for every person who has helped bring Life, Justice, and Peace into public life.

Be a Catholic voice. Your actions can make a difference.

“You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
— Acts 1:8 🕊️

On the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, we remember that Christ does not leave His disciples without a mission. He sends them forth to bear witness to the Gospel with courage, hope, and faith.

That same call remains with us today: to proclaim Christ not only in word, but through lives rooted in love, service, and care for one another — in our homes, our communities, and in public life.

While some dioceses celebrate the Ascension today, many dioceses in the United States observe this solemnity on the following Sunday (May 17). Wherever and whenever we celebrate, the message remains the same: we are called to be witnesses of Christ to the ends of the earth.

Millions of people continue to suffer from hunger, threatening the dignity of the most vulnerable and reminding us of our shared responsibility to care for one another.

In his May prayer intention, Pope Leo XIV invites us to pray that no one might lack the food they need, and that we may grow in gratitude, sharing, and solidarity.

That prayer also calls us to action.

Catholic Relief Services and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops are urging all Catholics to contact Congress as lawmakers consider the 2026 Farm Bill and fiscal year 2027 funding. These decisions will help determine whether critical food assistance and humanitarian aid programs are protected for families here at home and around the world.

As the public policy voice of the bishops of Washington state, the WSCC works to bring Life, Justice, and Peace into public life. This includes encouraging Catholics to stay informed and raise their voices for policies that protect the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized.

Please take a few minutes to contact your legislators and urge support for programs that reduce hunger, uphold human dignity, and serve the common good.

Care for Creation is part of our call as Catholics — and it is the focus of our upcoming Life. Justice. Peace. webinar.

Join the WSCC on Thursday, May 14, from 12:00–1:00 PM PST for a conversation with Dan Misleh, Executive Director of Catholic Climate Covenant, on how Catholics can better understand and live out care for our common home.

This carousel offers a brief introduction to the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Care for Creation — the belief that the earth is God’s gift, entrusted to our care.

As Catholics, we are called to protect people and the planet, especially those most vulnerable to environmental harm. Care for creation connects to clean air and water, food security, public health, faithful stewardship, and the well-being of future generations.

Can’t attend live? Register anyway and receive the recording afterward. The full webinar will also be posted on our YouTube channel, .

For 50 years, the Washington State Catholic Conference has helped bring the Church’s voice into public life in Washington state.

In this 50th Anniversary reflection, Bishop Frank Schuster, Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle, reminds us that the work of Catholic advocacy is not about politics alone — it is about the Gospel. It is about unity, compassion, justice, and walking with those who are vulnerable, poor, marginalized, or in need.

As the public policy voice of the bishops of Washington, the WSCC continues to advocate for life, justice, peace, and the dignity of every person.

This work is ongoing. But with faith, hope, and God’s grace, we can continue building a more just and loving society together.

Government by the people requires access.

The latest WSCC Catholic Advocacy Bulletin is now available in English and Spanish, highlighting an important local advocacy opportunity for Catholics in Washington.

With the legislative candidate filing period ending May 8, Catholics are encouraged to ask candidates how they will protect citizen access, transparency, and public dialogue in the legislative process.

Catholic social teaching reminds us that participation in public life is part of our responsibility to the common good. When citizens are informed, heard, and involved, our communities are better served.

As Catholics in Washington, we are called to stay engaged, ask thoughtful questions, and help ensure that public decision-making remains open and accountable.
