The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life (S.E.E.L.) of Puget Sound

The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life (S.E.E.L.) of Puget Sound SEEL is a 9 month retreat in "everyday life" that features daily prayer, spiritual direction every 2 weeks and monthly gatherings of prayerful reflection St.

What are the Spiritual Exercises? Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order, developed his Spiritual Exercises so that people could retreat for 30 days of prayer and silence to grow in their relationship with God and learn to listen for the voice of the Spirit in their lives. Eventually he also adapted the Exercises for people who could not, for various reasons, go away for 30 days. This ad

aptation, called the 19th Annotation, is the basis of the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life retreat, referred to as SEEL, and it invites people to go through the Exercises with the guidance of a spiritual director over a period of nine months. What are the requirements? This retreat is ideally suited for those who have an established a discipline of personal prayer, have had the experience of sharing their experience with another, and who are committed to deepening their faith. Our spiritual directors work with those who desire to grow in these areas. Participants are expected to commit to an hour of prayer each day, meet with a spiritual director twice a month, and meet one Saturday a month for a three hour retreat with other participants.

Congratulations Hickmans!

St. Peter Favre was one of St. Ignatius’ closest friends, trusted for his deep understanding of the Spiritual Exercises and heart for Ignatian spirituality. Each year at the Hearts on Fire celebration and benefit dinner , the ISC presents the Peter Favre Award to a person or persons who embody these values and inspire others to live them more fully. The ISC is proud to present the 2024 Peter Favre Award to John and Carolyn Hickman.

Carolyn and John’s devotion to Ignatian spirituality spans decades, and they both have played integral roles for the Ignatian Spirituality Center, serving the community in countless ways, always as models of humility, warm hearts, kindness, and deep faith.

“Pope Francis canonized Argentina’s first female saint, María Antonia of St. Joseph — known affectionately in the pope’s home country as “Mama Antula”…Mama Antula (1730–1799) was a consecrated laywoman who promoted Ignatian spirituality, founding Buenos Aires’ House for Spiritual Exercises at a time of widespread hostility to the Jesuit order.”

Pope Francis praised the Argentine saint as “a model of apostolic fervor and boldness” for traveling “thousands of miles on foot” to bring people to God.
