“The weekly Sabbath is an important safeguard against the overreach “enthusiasm” that constantly threatens Christian faith; it protects the church against tendencies to blur or even lose sight of the differences between the eschatological “already” and “not yet.” The Sabbath is a sure sign to the church that it is still “on the way,” a recurring reminder to believers that while most assuredly they already belong to the new creation, are already resurrected with Christ, and daily are being renewed inwardly, still, in the body, in their psycho-physical existence, they are short of the final resurrection-rest that “awaits the people of God.””
