Simon, son of John, confesses the true content of faith about Jesus, declaring, "You are the Christ, Son of the living God." Jesus then places the name "Peter" upon him for His confession is the solid "rock" on which the church stands against even the gates of hell. At St. Peter's congregation we make that same confession in expanded form reciting the Apostles' Creed. Our hymns also state this powerful message of faith and the enduring nature of the church including the words of LSB 662 (v. 2) "Onward Christian Soldiers."

When questioned why He left us, Jesus responds, "my child, it was at those times that I carried you. The single set of prints are mine." Today we hear words from Psalm 28 acknowledging the need to turn to God for all our needs and understanding He responds with great mercy toward us. Connecting with this theme we also review the words of LSB 739, "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." We can be thankful Jesus often carries us, leads us on, toward our heavenly home for so often we are "tired, weak, and worn."

In Matthew 14:22-33 the disciples of Jesus struggle against the wind and waves on the Sea of Galilee. In the midst of this challenge Jesus comes walking toward them in the darkness of the early morning. After announcing Himself He asks Peter to come to Him on the water. When Peter begins to look around and fear takes over, he begins to sink, and Jesus answers His cry for help with a hand of deliverance. In our time of need Jesus reaches out to deliver us from our sins and raise us up from the depths of despair and imminent death.

Psalm 105:39-43 reminds us of God's provision for the people of Israel during 40 years in the wilderness. In spite of His goodness towards them they often ignored and neglected to give God credit. The descendants of these people had the same problem in Romans 9:1-5. God chose them to the highest position and promised through them a Savior, His Son, for the whole world. Still, many ignored and rejected this gift. Lest we think their actions unusual, we should beware that we do not take for granted the gifts of God both for physical needs and for our soul in hearing His Word, rejoicing in the waters of Baptism, and ingesting the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion for the forgiveness of sins.

God hears our prayers. Right?! Yes, He does when we pray with faith in the name of Jesus. Verses from Psalm 86 and Isaiah 44:6-8 remind us that beseeching any other god is foolishness. The Lord, the covenant God who makes and keeps promises, as revealed in His Word, alone hears and responds to our prayers of thanksgiving, confession, and supplication. Even when we struggle to know what to say, or grow weary of repeating the same words over and over, our God, the Lord, knows what we need and offers comfort as He walks with us through times of gladness and times of sadness.

Reviewing LSB 578 "Thy Strong Word" we reflect on God's complete work, creating light amid the darkness, giving new life amidst sin and death through the cross and empty tomb, and nourishing a life of fruitful living through the Spirit by following Jesus.

LSB 965 God Bless Our Native Land serves as both a hymn of gratitude for God's past and present blessing to our nation and a prayer for Him to continue His watchful care for our future. When we see and hear these things in the news of the day, we can find comfort in the words of Psalm 46. Martin Luther wrote the hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" based on the words of this psalm. In spite of the frequent chaos caused by Satan in our temporal existence, God has given us assurance of final victory and deliverance through His Son, Jesus, our Lord and Savior. "Be still and know He is God!"

Freed from slavery to sin through Jesus we have the challenge to now yoke ourselves to our Savior and live for Him (Matthew 11:30 where Jesus says, "my yoke is easy, and my burden light."). In Romans 6:17-18, St. Paul speaks of this freedom from a slavery that leads to spiritual death so we can become "slaves" to Christ. This "slavery" is not burdensome but joyous in the fact that we live for the one who desires and gives all good things to us, now and for eternity. Thus, we can pray and can live out the opening words of LSB 784, "Take my life, and let it be, consecrated, Lord, to Thee."
