Today our Sunday School classrooms discussed the story of the Widow's Mite and how it emphasizes that God looks at the intention and heart behind an action, not the material value of the gift. May this inspiration carry you to Valentine's Day this week and always.

In our Gospel text for this Sunday, we’ll hear Jesus say, “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world.” But long before he uttered those words, the prophet Isaiah was already painting a picture of what light and salt look like when righteousness touches the ground.

In our Old Testament reading for this week, Isaiah 58, God speaks through the prophet to a people who are very religious—and yet, also very confused. They fast, they bow, they say all the right prayers, but still they wonder: Why don’t we see God move? Why does heaven feel so silent?

Note that God answers not with condemnation, but with clarity:

“Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,
to let the oppressed go free,
to share your bread with the hungry,
to bring the homeless poor into your house…?”

What Isaiah is referring to is not righteousness as perfectionism. Nor is it about moral achievement or even private virtue. Instead, Isaiah is describing righteousness as relationship. It is righteousness that restores, repairs, and responds to the real needs of the world.

Note that Isaiah doesn’t abandon the tradition. He asks what worship is for, and he won’t let us separate it from the world outside the sanctuary.

And the result of this kind of faithfulness?

“Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your healing shall spring up quickly...
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer.”

There’s something here for us.

We, too, are a people shaped by ritual and liturgy, by sacred songs and ancient prayers. And sometimes we, too, can forget what those practices are meant to form in us. But Isaiah reminds us: holiness isn't an escape from the world. It's a way of living within it. Attuned, available, and committed to the good of others.

May the Spirit prepare us this week to receive not only Christ’s call, so that we may meet the world Christ sends us into.

With you on this journey,
Pastor Chris

Pause. Breathe. Begin again.

North Scottsdale United Methodist Church invites you to begin the Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m. This quiet, prayerful service opens the season of Lent—a sacred time for reflection, humility, and renewing our hearts through God’s grace.

Ash Wednesday has been part of Christian worship for centuries, calling us to honest self-examination and a gentle turning toward God. During the service, ashes—made from last year’s Palm Sunday branches—are placed on the forehead or hand as a small cross, accompanied by the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” It’s a powerful reminder of both our humanity and God’s enduring mercy.

This simple, contemplative service includes scripture, prayer, music, a brief message, and the imposition of ashes—creating space to slow down and listen for God’s presence.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day journey toward Easter. In the Methodist tradition, Lent invites us to lean into the means of grace through prayer, worship, generosity, and acts of compassion as we prepare our hearts for the joy of the resurrection.

All are welcome. Come as you are. 🕯️

Our History

Our church family has been in ministry in North Scottsdale since January 29, 1978. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to reflect the vitality and growth of the north Scottsdale area. Our congregation continues to grow. Under the pastoral leadership of the Rev. David McPherson, ground was broken December 12, 2004 on a new 17,000 square foot sanctuary, which was completed in January 2006. The new sanctuary building includes facilities to accommodate a 60-member choir, a nursery for infants and toddlers, a bride's room for weddings, office space and storage. The sanctuary is stadium-style in design to better facilitate viewing for 600 people. The old sanctuary has been converted into a multi-purpose Fellowship Hall, complementing the existing Christian Education/classroom wings, library and administrative offices.

Some faces have changed over the years, but “the tie that binds” has been the love of everyone in the congregation who has helped North Scottsdale United Methodist Church to continue to reach out to the greater community. If you are looking for a church family, we invite you to join us in this journey!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call (480) 948-0529, email [email protected] or stop by the church at your convenience. Our normal weekday office hours (M-TH) are 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Or check out our websites:
